I clean my sunsun's every 4 month or so and like xraycer said never got any sludge. I used the blue pad and white pad on the bottom tray. The next 2 trays I fill it up with ceramic rings and balls. Top tray is my polishing pad. I feed every 2 days or so.

annamarie92 how often do you clean out your canisters?

I have 3 of these Sunsun canisters all set up with Poly-fil, as I'd already described, and I've never had this issue. I clean out my canisters every 1-2mos and 50% wc every 3-4days. Even in a 2 month period, I never get any sludge, so never needed to do the Rid-X thing.

It wasn't clogged up with sludge, the canister is pretty clean. I think the sheets of poly that I was using were too thin and trapping air. I had a tray filled with poly fil and a thin sheet of poly on top op it, it seemed air was getting trapped there. After I took that sheet out it seemed to remedy the problem. If that makes any sense, it's hard to describe. I clean my canister about once a month, it's never super dirty. I think I just had my media too thick or set up wrong.

That's how I'm going to set mine up. I don't have a problem with sludge, I think I just packed too much media into it. I had sheets of poly in every tray. I'm going to set mine up like yours, blue sponge on bottom since that's where most mechanical takes place maybe a second tray with poly fill and the rest with my bio media.

Mine is set up through the corner flow system on my tank. I'm wondering how to set up the second one I'm getting.

With my 90 set up, I used the plumbing/tubings that came with the kit. The other 2 canisters are with my 180 and with that set up I couldn't use the factory plumbing so I had to make my own plumbing with pvc pipes. You can check this out at the link in my signature section below
