Aquatop vs. SunSun

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a cf-500uv and I like it, priming is a pain sometimes but besides that it keep my tank crystal clear.

Additionally, I'm convinced the pump on it is weaker than advertised, and the plastic tubing connectors it comes with are flimsy at best.

I'm using the CF500UV right now, thought it'd be a great purchase due to price, but in the future I will ONLY buy Eheims.

I'm running a Sunsun HW-302 on a 26 gallon community tank I have. It definitely manages the bioload, even when I have it slightly overstocked, and provides some decent mechanical filtration as well.

However, the build quality is pretty bad - the spray bar, intake and piping are made of about the cheapest plastic imaginable, as has already been mentioned. Plus the baskets always seem to get stuck during cleaning.

Additionally, it always seems to puke detritus into my tank everytime I have to prime it. Not a big deal - it easily settles - but it is slightly disheartening to clean a tank and then have your filter puke into it.

The biggest difference between buying a Sunsun and Aquatop is that you won't have access to Aquatop's customer service if you go the Sunsun route. I've heard the Aquatop people do a good job, so it may or may not be worth it.

If you have a 130 or 180 I would make that two canisters or if your HOB is a big one such as Aquaclear110 it may be enough. Not sure about Sun-Sun but the 530 is rated only to 150 and at that I run a second canister on my 125. While its a good filter for the money it's not a Eheim or FX5. Allot has to do with bio load also?

Thou my research I have found that “AQUATOP” and “SUNSUN” are made by the same china company. Aquatop being the top of the line product i.e. better quality parts and construction and higher price tag. And Sunsun is the budget brand with a little lower quality (but still a good product.) and a lower price.

You see this kind of merchandising all over. For example if you go to a high end electronics store and buy a TV you will spend a lot, but if you go to a discount store like Wal-Mart you could get the same TV but it will be of lower quality hence the lower price but look the same on the outside.
It is more about budget the anything.
I bought the “Aquatop CF500UV 5-Stage Canister Filter with UV 9W” more for better quality parts then the Sunsun version at a lower price tag.
But it is up to the consumer to do their recherché and chose for then self’s.
But whatever you choose enjoy the exploration of an aquarium.

It is a good deal for the price and my pump runs good on mine, its prob just depends how much and what kind of media your using. Priming is my only issue with it.

I have the aquatop it is a good filter but like the other peoples said i would put 2 on a 135 fish tank.. I had 1 of them on my 135 i wasn't happy with the flow i had so i had to get a power head also to get the water moving in the tank.. But i kept my tank decently clean... If you have the money you Will be much happier with an ehiem or fluval way easier to prime compared to the aquatop..
