aqueon led lighting thoughts/opnions needed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I absolutely LOVE the Aqueon LED lights, and currently have them on 3 different tanks. Personally I prefer the more natural looking underwater low lighting they give off. On my 6ft tanks I run a single 48" unit with a single white tube. On my 90 I run 2tubes, one white, one red. They also have a new tube out with a combo of green, white, and red LED's.

These are fish only tanks though, no plants. I previously had the same light as you, Hagen Glo T5HO, which while it lit up my tanks like the 4th of july, it also grew algae like there was no end in sight. It's personal taste when it comes to lighting so what you may prefer may be the opposite of what is aesthetically pleasing to the next persons eyes. My fish room has zero ambient lighting, so that might make a visual difference as well.

It was John (Jc1119) that turned me on to these lights, you can check out some of his fish & tanks shots in the following thread.

Unfortunately the one thread that showed his fishroom, and where he discussed these lights, can't be found at the moment because search is down.

I have one with three day white tubes, bright as hell and gives moderate growth on the lower to medium light plants.

my only beef is that the power adapter died on me, haven't bothered to replace it so am using the (noticeably dimmer) T5 that came with the tank.

how would you compare the led to the t5h0 we both have ? 10000k/18000k t5h0 vs. aqueon 2 day white bulbs and colourmax ?

As I said previously, I prefer the more natural looking underwater low lighting and shimmer that the LED give off. But you can't compare the overall brightness (lumens) they give off to a HO fixture. (2 x 54 watts) The Aqueon is a total of 7 watts per tube, so it's low lighting compared to your Hagen fixture. On the other hand, I'm only running a single 48" 7w cool white tube on my 6ft tanks, and for me personally that's enough, I like the look. And it's not because I'm cheap, I have extra tubes on hand. :) IMO 2 cool white, and one red, or three of the new white/green/red tubes would be more than enough light for a fish only, or low light planted tank.

I grabbed my LED's at Petsmart when they were on sale, and if I didn't like them I simply would have returned them for a refund.

hmmm, ya maybe I keep my eyes peeled for them to come on sale around here either pet smart or big als maybe boxing day sale :)

I think if I buy a fixture I will get 2 extra tubes to run 2 day white tubes and one colour max tube, do the fixtures come apart easily ? thinking maybe putting two small hooks attached on the top to hang it, or maybe I should get two 36" fixtures for full/more coverage ?

I'm not too sure that you would want to hang these? It's doable, I'm just not sure how the LED light would look if it was suspended too high over the tank. I like how the ends fade off a bit with the 48" fixtures in a 72" long tank, but again, that's just me. You might hate it? lol

well I have the t5h0 about 3" above the tank for 2 reason 1 - little bit more coverage in the tank 2 - I can slide and open all my lids without trouble lol (sliding glass tops)

Yes, there's certainly a lot more options out there compared to just a few yrs ago. Zoo Med has a fairly new line of HO LED lighting systems.
