Aqueon pro heater 150w not enough for 40 gallon

I have 40 gallon breeder tank, I set the temperature to 82 f but tank is at 75 something. I keep the house at 65 in winter. Is the heater not enough for that difference? Or I got a faulty one? Water flow is alright in tank, i have two sponge filters on two sides and aquaclear 70 in center. Heater is on one side.

The thermostat on the heater is probably inaccurate. Keep turning it up until you get to the desired temp In the tank and keep an eye on the heater making sure it’s turning off and coming back on. If it’s constantly on and never shuts off than its being over worked.

I just changed it to 84 and it turned on, I will check actual temperature in evening. Do you think I should get it replaced?

It could be broken, where the light goes on and there is no heat from the element. When it is on, you can grasp the heater underwater and see if there is any heat coming from heat.

Thanks, I think it should be working as temperature is above 74-75F and my room is at 65F. I will try and check it either way in evening.

They don't have a guideline for 40 gallon, I am looking at increase of 17 degrees. But I think I am right spot.

My 150's work hard to keep my 29s at 82 with my house at 70, I bumped the house temp a bit instead of switching to 200s.

running the tank heaters can be as expensive as running the house heater (depending on heater and weather)
