I was thinking of buying one but the temperature here where I live will get to 45F in winter. Does that mean I can forget this idea as I was planning to put it in an outdoor pond?
Yes you would be wasting your money

85 hex? They were in a 105 gallon 5'x1.5'x2' when I was there earlier this week. And no flashing...arapaima very rarely get parasites...

Hey Prof.

Just a longshot but were you able to see if they were either Arapaima arapaima or one of the other three A. mapae, A. agassizii or A. gigas.

Arapaima arapaima, the only one seen today, is easy to tell apart from the others as it has a deeper caudal peduncle and has 31 rays in the caudal fin ( the fish sold incorrectly as A. gigas worldwide). The other three have less than 18 and have a narrow peduncle and I realize that no living ones have been seen in decades (but we can always look, remember how old four legs was rediscovered in 1938 Latimeria chalumnae and 1997 Latimeria menadoensis.).

I am surprised that Tiktaalik roseae does not appear on your list of wanted fish, since a live one would draw more money than even a live Coelacanth.

Definitely the common one...I saw the other Arapaima species thread and was thinking about when I was there.

and if you go there today bro
they are flashing..
but soo cute i wanted one bad

buddy, are you sure you went there? How can you mistaken a rectangular tank from a hex???

Went there today. Very scary that anyone would buy these monsters! I'd be scared to think what u would do in a couple years.

arapaima can not be kept in the outdoor pond since the temp is very low in Canada.
I have try one in California. the Summer was OK, but not the winter. It's very hard to maintain temp out door. If temp goes under 70. Your arapaima can not live.

That's cheap for an arapaima. Here it's usually around 200 for small ones. But 75 gal is definitely not recommend for them, they'll outgrow it quick.
