arapaima at lfs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree about that, I've seen it all to often working at a pet store people get things like oscars and think because they are only 3 inches when they buy them they can keep them in a ten gallon tank...I can't imagine what they do with these wonderful giants...I think we all should keep buying them from places like this so we know they go to proper owners!

What a shame.
More so shame on that LFS for selling them to non-educated customers.

Yeah I seriously got In an argument with the owner when he said anyone who wants them can have them that he doesn't care it pissed me off big time I was shocked to even see them there first thing I thought was wow here comes a ban on fish in cali because there will probably be ten arapiama in our local lakes sucks that people like that are even allowed to own a fish store and have that much responsibility

When I saw the post the first thing that came to mind was Long Island.
Even if you had a pond big enough wintering them over on LI past the fisrt season while they were still small enough to bring inside would be very diffacult. What would you do with them after that? They really should be illegal to keep at least in any state where it's warm enough for them to survive outdoors year round.

This is not an aquarium fish that is even remotly suitable for most and by most I mean most as in 99.99% of fishkeepers world wide. They should be kept in public aquariums that have facilitys large enough to keep them and that requires touhsands of gallons of clean water compounded by the fact these fish are open water pedators that need space to swim and hunt not seditary bottom feeders that lay in one place waiting to ambush a passer buy.

Selling these fish in a LFS is irresponsable. At minimum they should require a permit, be registered annually and require proof of abilty to house a full grown specimen. They should not be allowed to be resold and if you state you no longer have the fish the body must be turned over to animal controll to prove the fish is in fact dead and was not resold or released. Additionally only one fish should be allowed in anyones possision at any given time to prevent breeding. Even if everthing I mentioned was done you'll never stop illegal activity if enough potential profit was available to make it worth the risk.

I think people should do the exact opposite of what everyone is saying and not buy them. If you do theyre just going to import more because it becomes a hot item. The more you buy the more they get and let them stay in the lfs and that owner will be stuck trying to house and feed them.

sure might go just to check them out dont think ill buy them though still thinking it over...
thinking about hiring some extra hands to help with the pond so ya...

It deffinately is a lot of work, I had me, my husband, my brother, and my brother in law working on my pond for months and not including paying them, I spent thousands. Lol, it was just finished a few days ago and its still circulating and heating up so its not quite ready for fish just yet, and my huge custom tank (apx 24' 4000+g) won't be done for a while which would be where they would go during the winter, so as much as I want to help I don't want to get them when I am not 100% ready. I want nothing more than for them to go to good homes. Someday soon I should be able to do it myself. Got my fingers crossed for them!!!
