Arapaima at LFS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One of the people on my Instagram kept two in a ten gallon tank. I can post link to this thread later of the pics. But the owner feeds them goldfish and I think said his biggest FW tank is a 90G. Poor guys. Arapaima don't belong in the trade.

IMO a big tank is 100+ gallons, you can't keep a HUGE fish in a big tank... HUGE fish need HUGE tanks... even on MFK, most of us can't house that... these guys get huge, like 6 ft avrage I think" I would not keep a arapima in anything less than a 20x8x6, meanehile the avrage sized tank they go into is probibly a 75-200 gallon...

Absolutely irresponsible that these guys are sold to LFS or general public. Fact is, most LFS are uninformed on these and most exotics and get these fish simply for the fact they draw inquisjtive customers. Odds are it will end up with some joker who thinks his 55 is a massive tank....I predict it will be dead in less than 2 months.

they don't belong in the hobby along with rtc irredescent sharks pacu to name a few. Bigger is not always better. It is just like a lot of exoctic snakes and reptiles wolf hybrids etc.... Some people just got to have them and then the animal suffers because of the stupid owners.

Please post the vids or pic. As sad as it is I'm very interested to see the way the fish look.😕
I wish people would think of the fish more than themselves.

Now I know people on this site have like 10,000 gallon tanks and the fish thrives, but I think you all can agree with me when I say it is sheer animal cruelty to keep this fish in a house aquarium.

Arapaima in a 10 gallon tank=😥😰😢

I agree. Its always a spurr of the moment decision. Poorly thought out. That is if any thought was actually put in the decision to get an arapaima. Like "I saw this at my local public aquarium and decided I want one"

I actually believe nobody on mfk has the tank needed to house these. That's include araipameg's 50k tank. These fish are several feet thick and tall, if we went by the 1 gallon of water per cubic inch of fish rule a full grown arapaima need something like 150,000G.
