Arapaima Pond Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just spent the entire afternoon reading this thread from beginning to end, and I must say I commend your dedication to your rescue fish! It looks amazing already and I will be waiting with baited breath to see the finished product.
Great job!

Thanks! Always nice to see people enjoying it. Hope it will give some ideas to other people. Same as I got many ideas from MFK and AC.

Sure the finish line is close now.

Cheers,
Luc

As mentioned, I will make another underwater video is Saturday, just to see how it progresses.
First of course sleep and hurry back to the factory. Check how it is tomorrow.
Can't think of a reason for the water to go worse, but still, seeing is believing...

Cheers,
Luc

The big cleaning continues....heheee...
Couldn't wait till Saturday...shot a couple of video's, now uploading...
It is really stunning....from last week dark grey/green with lots of solids, it now has come to a very light yellowish tinted but clear water.
You can see from the underwater video that it's not 100% yet, but lets just wait how far it gets over the coming days.
Mr. T. can be seen in all his beauty throughout the pond, and that's what it is all about.
Can only imagine large koi in there as well.

Amazing...I read through the whole thread again yesterday night and it's nice to see the initial plans, the 'learning and gambling' by taking different routes, one-line suggestions from people that took me in almost opposite directions for the better of it.
Now with the bog kicking in, cleaning the water to what it is now, I'm just a plain happy guy here.

Be patient for a couple of minutes, they're still uploading and verifying...

Enjoy...

you weren't kidding. very good improvement in the water clarity.. third video shows it the best imo. Keep it up the good work Luc, i'm sure Mr. T is thanking you for it :)

On the way home, afternoon sun in the pond looks amazing. Seeing Mr.T. Floating around...curious for tomorrow again. Still hoping it continues like this..
For Saturday work cut out. Testing, adjusting liner, build diffuser, fill with stones and bring online.
Not sure if Saturday is enough but we'll see.
Once that's done, we can clean up the place and shovel the remaining gravel around the pond.

It's fun going to work and see the water clearing up every day. Didn't stop clearing, it's much better again than yesterday.
Will wait till Saturday to make a video above and under water again to show the difference.
Mr. T. looks fabulous in such clean water. Hundreds of other fry and fish in there. 1 bag of catfish, small blue/white fish that I got about 4 weeks ago. They turn out to be great schooling fish, going around like crazy as one big swarm over the bottom. Cleaning all the muck from the bottom continuously, so for now, great to have.
Saturday coming close, so need to prepare and buy stuff tomorrow to make the diffuser and the test and adjust the last bog and grow-out.

Switched off the air for a couple of minutes to see all the fish and more important, the domes over the drains. Both doing just perfect. Very happy with that idea of concrete in a plastic washing bucket with PVC spacers. At 30+ kg each, they protect the drain and can't be moved easily.
But having the air switched off shows really how good the water is and given that the first bog is doing so well, I'm just getting more energy to fix that 2nd one this week.

Cleaning lady is jumping around in circles from joy. She's always been pushing and complaining about the water and to change water and everything just like with the temporary bog. I've kept her off, and the only reason the listened was that the water did not smell bad at all. The temp-pond, after 3 days, would start to smell bad without proper filtration. Pond never has.

Anyhow, back to work for now. More updates to come.

Cheers,
Luc

Amazing pond Luc:WHOA:

Mr T is HUGE! Have you managed to measure him?

Hello Hommus,

Thanks for checking. It's not nearly what you did, but given the time, the DIY and use of available scrap at the factory, it turns out well.
Last time I did a guesstimate measurement of Mr. T, he came to about 100-110 cm.
He's enjoying the large area, behaves like a dog and is very easy to keep happy.

I would absolutely do it all over again and who knows, future wise, I might get enough land to build a pond like yours and keep several Mr. T's.
(I realize that it would have to be a pond like yours with multiple times the water-volume...lol...).
Financially, the pond is dirt cheap, lots of scrap used in it and simple solutions without any 'hi-tech' filters or anything else.
Did cost more than the initial 1000 USD and revised 2000 USD, need to check the bills, but it will add up to about 2700-3000 USD for the complete setup.

After that, no maintenance, no water-changes, no filter-cleaning or anything except removing and changing some plants and fish....that's it.

Cheers, look forward to see you more on MFK,

Regards,
Luc

The second video, (the under water part) is stunningly clear. He's real close to the camera, but the details...makes it absolutely great to see.

Curious what you guys say...

Luc
