Arapaima Pond Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Will be looking forward to seeing it! Would love to have an Arapaima, (yeah, and I'd love to have a lion and a tiger and a black panther too)....but I'm going to have to settle for the two pacu we have. It's wonderful that you are providing your rescued Arapaima such a great home.

It helps that I am crazy about fish.. :-)
And Mr. T. being such a charmer..looking at you with those eyes and mouth a bit open..lol.

Scary to build a pond like that though, without having ever build one before.
In theory it should all work, but the tricky part is in moving/making smaller Mr. T's pond first, then putting in the liner and get that bottom-drain fixed. Will be quite some prayers and hoping it all works, then see how it holds with the settling-tank.

I'm reasonably sure about it, but seeing is believing trumps every theory for me.
Main concern will be to keep Mr. T. quiet. Then digging that slide and open up his pond to the new one.
Lots of rubbish from his old pond will get into the new one, but that can't be helped much. Good test for the filter setup...lol.

How is your tank anyway Pacu Mom? Is it up and running? Or still working on it?
Would love to see it running with your pacu's happily checking it out.

For me, target is end of March to have it all complete and have at least one settling tank and bog-filter running.
The other side might for now be only settling-tank with the water going directly into the pond or I keep the bog-area empty and use it as a grow-out mini-pond... Ideal for my RTC and other fish I'll sure be looking around for.
The pump would then have a big filter-sponge at the inlet, so I'll be getting pretty clean water into that mini-pond, then overflowing into the main pond.

Evolving plans from the first: "Dig a hole and drop in a pump" lol.

Well, testing the first bit again...washed in another 3 bags of sand, I think we're close to having filled all the gaps.
Now waiting for the water to drain away and will try some compacting again after lunch.
let some water into the tank as well, to counterweight from pressure below the tank and to check if the water stays now.
If all ok, then I'm going to put in another 20 cm, slowly bringing it up.
Very small leaks will settle with dirt anyway, so hope to have it all finished after today.

So far so good, nothing leaking it seems.
Added some more and see how it holds...might go to 50% at the end of the afternoon.
Then check back on Monday again.

Keeping my fingers crossed...Want that part of my list...

Baby is due May 17th. Momma is tired and getting big.

With regard to your idea for the bog area, that is the same thing I have planned to do with the arapaima exhibit when we open the nature center. Their enclosure will be a 60' diameter pool 6-10 ft. deep. The bog/swamp area will be on timer programmed to follow the tide changes on a daily basis. Water will be pumped into the bog/swamp on the low tide and released back in on the high tide and so forth. Some barrier walls and mechanical filtration will prevent sediment from returning to the pool. Water from the pool will also circulate through out aquaponics system.

Hello Pete, can imagine your wife being tired... it's close to my son's birthday, he's turning 7 on the 12th of May.

You got some some big projects ahead. Baby, Monster-tank at home.. Arapaima exhibit is new though. Will that be at home or is it a project at a public place? Sounds good for the tide-change. That's too much for me, continuous filtering and cleaning of the water is my priority for the first bog-area.
But the other side has one planned also and still not sure if it's going to be exactly the same or not.
Might try something different there.

Anyhow, end of the day..on the way home soon..
Cheers,
Luc

Monday morning...water in the settling tank dropped 5cm since Saturday 3pm. That's a good enough result to write it off to some pin-holes that will settle with waste/debris over time so the Settling tank is now officially off my list.

This week will be some sand, metal rail at the back of the pond and rolling out the liner, then prepare for putting it in.
Hope on Saturday to fix the bottom-drain. Maybe Sunday go here to finish it and test all on Monday/Tuesday.
It's really getting time to finish the first part, need to move Mr. T asap...
