Wow, my last post was almost 3.5 years ago.. Time flies..amazing how Mr. T is with us for almost 8 years now.
Well, let's update a bit then..!
After almost 10 years in our current factory, we finally got approval from HQ to buy a property that will enable us to (hopefully) grown substantially here in Thailand. All this has taken a lot of time but seems to be just at the right time as everything is falling apart around us..lol.
Mr. T is still happy and healthy in his pond, but the pond itself is starting to give up. Had lots of trouble with rats and filters eventually started clogging up so as a last resort this august, I had to stop using the bottom-drains and have now two pumps hanging in the pond and using only the left side filter with 2 under-gravel pipes where the water is pushed through. It's filled up with water-hyacinth to take up some of the nitrates.
Works well for now, pond is reasonable clear and Mr. T and friends are doing ok.
Just for refresh, there's Mr. T, the arapaima, about 2 meters long. Then there's the 2 red-tails, about 60 and 80cm, 2 river fly turtles, about 30 and 40cm, a Chao Praya catfish and 1 peacock bass.
So with a new factory, we've decided to have the renovation contractor design and build a new pond. No hassle, with proper drawings, construction and filtration. He happens to have quite some experience with fish and will handle the complete project "turn-key", including the moving of the fish.
That gave me the idea to do another update here, just for those that over the years have followed this thread and encouraged me to take it on all those years ago.
This is the plan. The area for the fish is 4 x 9 meters. Filter area is 4 x 2 meters.
Depth of the pond is 1.10m and outside height is 1.20m (slightly lower than the plans.
In front there will be a 3 meter wide platform, not shown in the plans, of approximately 30cm high, to be able to enjoy the fish swimming around. Filter is pretty standard, over/under flow type with one incoming/settling chamber, two media chambers and the last one being pump-area. Returns will be at various parts of the pond.
Total construction cost (as said: "turn-key") will be THB 250,000 which is about USD 8,300 at today's exchange rates.
Construction started last week. Below the first pictures of rebar going in.
Construction will take about 3 weeks, then filling and settling, testing the systems and put in a bunch of feeders to get a start on the filtration.
Another month after that, we're getting closer to planning the move.
Exciting times..!
Cheers,
Luc
