Not to try and get a fight going but in order for you to get cb fish they had to have wild fish to start. All arapaimas are cb. No wild Pimas can be captured and sold. Also the same goes for gator gars. 99.9% of gators in the market are farmed in Asia. So it intern becomes a mute point.

I didnt know that. Thanks for the.info.

I remember watching wade... arapaima episode... and they were just gigantic... I wouldn't Dream of having one unless I had a swimming pool for a tank.

You could start of with a pond..then get a bigger pond.. rhen get 12 x 10 etc.. but then what. ??
A Swimming pool tank is the final upgrade 99% of most people will never have or do. Suppose you could give it to a public aquarium.

Remember the floating farm in the Pima episode that they were netting them out of. That is the size most will likely get to. I have yet to see a non wild fish in either Pima or gator the size all claim they get to. The biggest gator I know of is close to 40" the biggest Pima I believe arapimag or johnptc have them and I don't think they are more then 48" at most. There is a few more at 40" or so but nothing much bigger in personal tanks/ponds.

With gators I agree with you. But with pimas they are huge fish. Both Michaels and John's are bigger than 48". I believe Arapaimag has said his are closer to the 6' mark as I believe John's is supposed to be as well. Do I see them getting much bigger than that. not really, but that is still a giant fish. From people that I know and trust I have heard of growth rates of 30 to 36" the first year with a second year growth rate not far behind.

As far as the op's modified question the aro and tsn's should be fine. You might have some aggression issues towards the gar, as it will be unlikely to keep up with the growth of the others.

I didn't know theirs were bigger. Last I heard they were at the 4' mark. I actually expect 4-6' but in most cases I think they may reach 4' maybe 5'. Both those guy have huge tanks and they have been in there a long time. As bad as it sounds I think a lot will die before reaching that in most cases for one reason or another. I think a lot really is with how they are raised from fry. If they bare not given the best of care at a store when they need it the most I think that has a huge effect on their max size. I believe that both those people got theirs in special and right after import to have prevented any miscare from occurring. I will be raising some once I get my 10x10 up and going then my 10k. Just will be waiting on them for that. The same could be said with how they are with large fish.

I don't doubt that a lot die well before their time, same with most fish in this hobby. As far as care at the store I don't see that having a large impact myself. Last batch that I saw locally was sold out in about 2 weeks of getting them in. They weren't really sitting around for any excessive length of time, and would have been imported directly from SA.

Good luck on raising them in the future, my last one did very poorly, but that's what I get for purchasing a 4"er. Best to buy them bigger as they are very sensitive when young.

thanks for your help guys like sbuse said arapaima will not grow larger than 6 ft i mean they get larger than this but people who have owned them never had their paima growing 10 ft thats unheard of . i really like to have a paima my friend has one that is about 5 inches if i want i can have it. i will gow him out in a 8 x 4 x 3 pond until he gets 2.5 feet then i will put him in 10 x 12 pond. i mean i dont think he will get larger than 6 ft like sbuse said. he got it correct. paimas in the wild now also grows about 7 ft to 8ft those big catches are rare. and how can you except a farm bred paima to grow that size

You act like six foot is small, no way a 12x10 is big enough for a 6' fish:screwy: Have you though about how your going to keep this fish in the pond. Maintainence is going to require that you get in the pond with it. Chances are very good it will jump when this occurs, or even if it is spooked. I can't really comment on what it takes to properly house and care for a fish that size. I do know how much more it takes to house and care for a 30" fish compared to a 12" fish. So I would imagine that one could expect the same increase in effort and dedication needed to house a 6' compared to a 30" fish.

Do you have any experience in keeping a large fish? Any idea what it takes to even move a large fish? Any experience in building or maintaining a pond? The costs involved with heating that much water, not to mention the huge water changes? I think you would benifit greatly from some thorough research before buying such a fish.
