Are Barebottom tanks stressful to fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah, if you are gonna do bare bottom you should put in like tile frmo home depot as bare bottom is reflecty and trippy and the fishll be all wtf??? if not, paint the bottom of the tank, however that seems too permanent for me, i do sand but if i wanted bare bottom like i said id do tile

I go bare bottom on almost all of my tanks and I love it. Im a neat freak though so maybe thats why :) I started doing it because I lost a bichir to gravel consumption.

Bare tanks look so....bare....

I'd stress if I lived in a bare environ.....constantly seeing myself in the reflection....

fish dont see themselves like we do its an optical illusion created by the water when you look past the water directly you see right through and at an angle you see it mirrored for the fish inside the tank every surface is clear

if you want to keep cleanliness but have a smooth bottom you could always paint the bottom or add some color acrylic or slate to the bottom of your tank

In my opinion bare bottom is lazy. If I'm going to be responsible for somethings life i like to make sure it's as close to natural as possible and if that means vaccing every other day that's just fine! It's tight to fit it in with working 50+ hours a week and a rigid gym routine but i make it work. It may or may not be less or more stressful but i feel better about. I'm not knocking bare bottoms as they obviously work, it's just an honest opinion.

Lazy, blah blah blah. It's a choice and how is vaccing every other day less stressful and natural? Most fish in the wild never deal w/ tubes and human hands around them w/ out being able to distance themselves. Not to mention the topping off. I love the "natural" arguement. What's natural about keeping fish in a tank anyway? :headshake

All my fish beg for food when I walk past the tanks and eat like pigs. They don't seem stressed to me.

THERE ARE NO NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS THAT HAVE A GLASS BOTTOM. YOUR RIGHT , THERES NOTHING NATURAL ABOUT KEEPING FISH IN A TANK, SO WHY NOT TRY AND MAKE IT AS NATURAL AS POSIBLE FOR THEM.WOULD YOU FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE IN A PRISON CELL OR ON HOUSE ARREST?

I have a feeling that the bare bottom is a bit more stressful on a fish especially when it is new. They do get use to the limitation of not going down further but when they see things further below but can't get there I think they are frustrated. Many fish when they are in a new environment or under stress they like to have some cover to hide under or behind, if they can't get to the lowest point preseeved (sp?) then I think it takes them a bit longer to adjust to it.

Do you actually own any fish? Heck, you can try it in an empty tank. Turn off all the lights in your house and turn on the tank lights. Stick your head in there and look around, Ta-daa. You'll see yourself. Then, turn on your house lights and turn the tank light off. Stick your head in there, and you won't be able to even find your silhouette.

I have kept both and personally I do not like bare, it looks odd to me and the fish seem quite confused at first (but do seem to adjust)

I prefer gravel
