Are Barebottom tanks stressful to fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Bare bottom doesn't seem to stress the fish but i think sand gives a softer bottom for bichirs to lay on and is as natural as a home aquarium can get. But its up to you.

I just set up a 60 gallon i was goin to go bare bottom i even painted to bottom on the out side. but i just didn't like to look so i threw a little gravel in

THERE ARE NO NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS THAT HAVE A GLASS BOTTOM. YOUR RIGHT , THERES NOTHING NATURAL ABOUT KEEPING FISH IN A TANK, SO WHY NOT TRY AND MAKE IT AS NATURAL AS POSIBLE FOR THEM.WOULD YOU FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE IN A PRISON CELL OR ON HOUSE ARREST?

I couldnt agree more...what fun is the fish keeping hobby if all you do is change the water and feed the fish? Give your fish a home that is as close to their native waters as possible. By this I mean dont put a bunch of broken beer bottles and garbage in your tank either

honestly it all just comes down to personal preference. i started off with sand and loved it, but then i went with tile and it looked hell of a lot nicer imo. iono why you guys are getting so heated, everyone keeps their fish dif ways and if you dont like it, deal with it.

Maybe it's the whole thing about raising and sometimes breeding the fish that are aesthetically pleasing to you? You know that thing that we are all doing it for be it bare bottom or not.

I guess I am the only realistic person in this thread. Fish are not self aware, they are affected by water parameters and not the comfy couch or bed you provide. If I stuck you in a prison cell and painted the walls to look like the outdoors you'd be happier than the next guy in a plain walled cell? A pig is a pig no matter how much lipstick you slap on it.

Do you actually own any fish? Heck, you can try it in an empty tank. Turn off all the lights in your house and turn on the tank lights. Stick your head in there and look around, Ta-daa. You'll see yourself. Then, turn on your house lights and turn the tank light off. Stick your head in there, and you won't be able to even find your silhouette.

So unless you paint or cover every pane of glass on your tanks, basically a pond, we are all in the same boat, bare bottom or not so.........

What's your point?

I don't understand how such a simple post causes so many members to bash a style of fish keeping.

thinking of going bare bottom for a cleaner new look. Is it stressful to the fish?

Thanks!

Where does it say.......

"What do you think about keepers who choose this route?"

I have both bare bottomed and gravelled bottomed and to be honest the fish seem to behave the same in both, so either way is OK for me.

JL that is excellent, I ever heard this saying before, it made me laugh alot.

I have a few of both.. and it boils down to health. my TSN has a barebottom tank, so I can keep it clean and maintain healthy water quality, he has his driftwood to chill on or around and is a very fat and sassy fish who swims around generally or chills out ontop of the driftwood. My fire eels have a PVC tube in their bare bottom tank and don't seem to mind much they can't dig, gravel would chew them up and non-silica sand is a pita to find around here and very $$$, I'de rather spend that money on their food, over making it "look pretty". the only tanks I have atm w/ gravel ect are planted tanks.

I wasn't bashing anyone except for people who still believe that fish can't see their reflections. It still gets said as if it were a fact, and it's not a fact. Sometimes they can and sometimes they can't. Some fish care and some don't. What each person does with this information is nothing to argue about.
