Bare bottom doesn't seem to stress the fish but i think sand gives a softer bottom for bichirs to lay on and is as natural as a home aquarium can get. But its up to you.

I wasn't bashing anyone except for people who still believe that fish can't see their reflections. It still gets said as if it were a fact, and it's not a fact. So unless you paint or cover every pane of glass on your tanks, basically a pond, we are all in the same boat, bare bottom or not so.........
