Are fish the most abused pet?

Betta fish are not easy. They are easy to kill, not easy to keep to their full size and life span. in my humble opinion.

Well honestly, because they take low amounts of food, need a small space, and can breathe atmospheric air they are perhaps the most hardy fish in the hobby, a healthy betta only lives for a few years, 2 usually i believe (correct if im wrong please), id say this fish is the one that is hardest for people to kill in my honest opinion.

I always thought they grew to about two inches or so,so just how big do they get?

Not much bigger, but to their full life span of what 4 years? Good luck getting them there if you dont know what you are doing. Most joe public keepers I know will kill 2 betas in 12 months then move on.

Dude, this fish gets killed daily! I have multiple relatives and friends who have killed them inside of 12 months.

As dedicated fish hobbyists we forget just how difficult it is to be successful. Of course some people get lucky and have wonderful long term tanks by luck, but how often does that happen?

The best advice you can give to someone who looks at your tank and says they want one is "its the best hobby ever, but you better be dedicated or else you'll have some garage sale items to sell in a year".

People have different perceptions of what is easy and what is not.The majority of people who go out and buy a set up can't even be bothered to learn the basics of aquarium chemistry and the requirements of the fish that catch their eye.

Im not saying any fish are easy to keep, please dont think i am, im just saying they are by far the hardiest that i have seen compared to other fish, my sister has kept a betta in a 2.5 gallon tank with no heater and barely any water changes for about 3 months now the poor thing, but it stills alive, not thriving by any means though because my sister doesnt care. Most tanks are like this, with the person just really not caring.

I would agree, its my favorite animals to keep, and you have to be dedicated to them to keep them thriving or you wont enjoy the hobby, i was just stating a hard to kill fish :/

In my experience its an easy fish to kill, you dont have to buy a heater or a tank or a filter and you can still kill in within a short amount of time.

First it's been a while since I've been on mfk and I can't navigate around mfk posts without having the message postblocking me. I'm supposed to respond to a thread...participate, it just so happens this was the post first avail so here I go.

Easy and difficult is all but a matter of opinion, what one defines as easy/hard may be considered totally the opposite to another.

In general animal cruelty occurs all the time. Whether it be in captivity or not in captivity it happens all the time. All outdoors sports that involve animals such as fishing and hunting are considered a form of animal cruelty in different degrees of cruelty depending what it is but nonetheless it's animal cruelty. Keeping any kind of animal in captivity for any reason is considered animal cruelty.

So whose stupid, fkd up, and/or whatever word one wants to dub those they are judging? One who keep animals in captivity(pets), kill, eat, fish, and or hunt any kind of animal are all guilty of animal cruelty, which would make one a hypocrite right? After all we've all killed an insect, fly, and/or a mosquito or too. Not to mention there are those of us who eat meat.

This is always a touchy subject I know so that's my 2 cents.
