Are guppies really that easy to breed?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't recommend it but I once put a couple guppies in a 5 gallon with some plants and completely ignored them for a month or two except occasionally throwing food in there. When I finally looked in there there was a lot of guppies and the anarchasis had grew pretty well too.

In my experience, it's quite difficult to breed and grow out enough livebearers, including guppies, as food. It takes literally months for a guppy to go from newborn to 1-2". Months.

Much easier is to culture red wiggler worms (AKA composting worms). It's easy, all you need is a rubbermaid bin and - in warm temps - they can double in a month. I've been culturing them in a bin in my fishroom for years. They're safe, high in protein and eat our kitchen veggie, fruit and paper waste.
I might have to look into this

They eat paper waste? Looks like homework is useful after all :)

This is true. Very similar to the jewels. But with these 2 species you need to be sure to keep them on their own. They are extremely aggressive when they have fry. I’ve had jewels kill oscars that were 3x bigger. I’ve also had convicts kill my black piranhas.
