My jag looks like it has some HITH starting, but I really have no idea why. Water parameters are straight, I just did a big water change yesterday, and it sort of appeared overnight.

None of my other cichlids have it (including my biggest one the oscar). He has been fighting with my male severum a lot lately since it looks like the male is trying to breed with the female, but the marks look too identical to be battle wounds.

Are they more succeptable to HITH than oscars?

How else do I treat this? I do water changes, should I add some salt? I am very confused.

nooo,dont put salt in a sa/ca tank
thats more for african rif fishes

but,,whats HITH??
because in europe we use other terms

The are both at risk. And it would have been over a matter of time nothing instant. I have a Pike with hole in the head being treated right now. You want to get on top of this for sure as it can spread to your other fish. Do you have a quarintine tank? How big is the tank that there in? Also have you ever dealt with this disease before? You may need to treat the tank that there in if you see any of your other fish showing signs of the disease. There are some great articles in the Disease and Illness section. you go check that out.

If it isn't that bad yet, just do some additional water changes for some time. I know you doubt the theory, but it could be injuries from the fights with the others as you suggested.

Onion what kind of salt would work best?

use aquarium salt, or rock salt. I have heard epsom salt as well. Don't use table salt or anything iodized. The only one I use is aquarium

Thanks Onion.. I would use this if your still thinking it's hole in the head. I have a case where my Pikes holes are like craters so i am using the Hole In The Head medicine as well as Vita-Chem (get some of that A.S.A.P) it is the true stapple of any fish and there foods. And I am also using Melaflex. But you may wnat to give it a week or two of good water changes and vac the substrait. Just to be sure your not calling a scare a disease.

Oh I have read that page, but its smaller than the dot on the oscar's first sign of HITH or HLLE whatever you want to call it. It literally just appeared overnight.

So it could be from fighting? The green severum has more damage on his face, but he just keeps charging the jag. I bet he did something to tick him off because the jag is really peaceful. Maybe it might be just some scratching. I will toss some aquarium salt in and do another water change today (this will be the 3rd one this week).

I ran out of nitrate/nitrite test strips because one of my angelfish died and I used a couple on that yesterday.

Thanks for the quik replies.
