I have a green and turquoise jewel(2.5") and a kenyi(2") that I watched go lip to lip and chase each other around for about 2 minutes. I got them both out of the same tank at my LFS and I haven't had any problems with them until now. I also got a baby convict in with them that also came out of the same tank that I have no problems with.

should I seperate them then? I can't really tell when too much fighting is enough.

Could settle in awhile...or they could kill eatch other. I suggest keeping a close eye on them, if the aggresion remains constant I would consider removing one or at least moving the decor around/adding some places to hide.

here is a picture of their tank, I know they both like the same hiding spot but the kenyi is kind of avoiding the jewel and the jewel is still going after him.

any suggestions? I really like the kenyi but I don't really like the jewel at all. The only reason I got him was to keep the kenyi company because I was throwing him in with a 5inch jd and two 4"-5". Funny thing is that every fish in the tank gets along perfectly accept for the kenyi and jewel.

I really don't know anything about where my cichlids come from but I suppose I will learn.

Would 2-3 blue rams work in this tank? In a couple of days I will be separating the JD and cons back into their old tank leaving just the jewel and kenyi by themselves in a 20g. I'd like to get fish that have a chance of breeding with one another. In fact I really really really want to try breeding/cross breeding to see what I end up with.

I'm more into stripes and sophisticated patterns and not so into the splotchy shiny look.

The cardinal rule is that you do NOT mix african cichlids and american cichlids. Of course there are slight exceptions, but generally, dont mix them.
Get rid of the jewel and stock with smaller africans. Your RD, JD and con are americans.

maybe I will put the jewel in with the others when I move them then.. Would krib do well and what about the blue rams? It would probably be easier for me to just look up american cichlids and african cichlids and figure it out for myself so.. Can somebody link me to a good list of continental cichlids with pics?
