anybody..? I'm just wondering how big a convict needs to be before him/her can "reproduce"?

My 1 inch males breed with my 2 inch females. They're some kind of mix of cons and another fish, but the same is true of purebred cons. As overbred as cons are some never grow very big anyway.

the aggression might be due to underfeeding.

well they are all seperated now..

now I have a 5"jd a 3.5"convict, 2"green jewel, 2"kenyi, and a 1.5"buttikoferi in my 30g tank. Its ridiculous how calm and nice they all are now.

I had to take everybody out of my 20g tank because I had convict babies and the 2 convicts were picking on everyone.

I don't remember a mention of the buttikoferi. You do realize how big these guys get, right? Big and very aggressive. Unless you're planning on a large future tank he's gonna have to go eventually.

oh yeah.. He's only 1.5" right now so by income tax time he ill have a nice setup. I grew up with my dad having a butti and its always been my dream fish. When he died my dad got him stuffed and mounted. I found him at my LFS for $2.99 a while ago and bought one thinking it was a baby butti and that they just looked weird when they were little but it was a kenyi.. I know I'm a moron whatever but when I went back the other day they actually had buttis so I got one. Hes actually the runt of my tank right now. They picked on him in the convict tank but thats because they were breeding. Now that hes in the 30g hes all over the place. Hes actually really good in the tank I have him in right now. I couldn't be happier. I am probably the luckiest fish keeper.. Out of all the aggressive fish I have, they barely ever fight. Since I started this thread the jewel and kenyi have settled down. I think they were just stressed having to share a tank with those breeding cons. It might just be because I keep the tank on the cooler side. I know if it gets warmer they tend to fight more. I keep all my cichlid tanks at about 77-78 degrees.

I also have a 11" midas in with a newly purchased 3" petsmart trimac or "low grade fh." They've been in the same tank for 2days now with no problems at all. The trimac was hiding yesterday but today he is all over the tank. He doesn't particularly go around the midas but I haven't had a problem yet. There is also 8 guppies in their tank which they have no interest in. I have the tank in one of the busiest areas of my house and my midas starts fights with everybody that walks by him. I know I have to keep my eye on them especially in such a small tank (60g) but they are doing great right now. I have a ton of rocks in the tank that the trimac can get away from the big guy from. I'm hoping if he does start getting picked on he uses them.

I also want a buttikoferi, I just don't have the room at the moment. I never seem to end up with most fish I plan on, I just end up with random fish by chance because either people give them to us or we see something neat at the fish stores, lol.

Part of your luck could be the temp, that definately has an effect, but it could also be that they're juveniles. I've had a lot of weird juvenile mixes that work and then as soon as one or more mature someone gets beat up. I do have some weird mixes of adult fish that aren't supposed to get along though, so anything is possible.

3.5-5 Months. My current largest con fry are about 1" TL , forgot age, but the females are already showing the slightest egg development. Some aggression between the 7 fry too. Although, I only have 1-2 males.

I'm just suprised my 6" jd isn't running the tank. Hes probably the most mellow fish of all. He's 2+ years old so I know he/she is full grown.

On another note, I was looking at my 30g tank earlier and my old convict is all beat up. I don't think it was from anybody in the 30g but from the convicts I had him with in the 20g two days ago. I feel bad for him, hes been the homliest looking fish ever since I've had him. Right now his fins are all cut up, and he has patches of white all over him but it doesn't look like ick. I'm just assuming thats where he got beat up and thats what it looks like when its healing. I will post some picks later. For now I raised the temperature in the tank, added some more salt, and some stress coat.

Argh. I keep trying to tell everyone this. White patches can = columnaris. Columnaris spreads and kills quicker at higher temperatures. Never automatically raise temps unless you know exactly what disease you're dealing with, you can actually be killing your fish faster.
Not saying your fish definately has columnaris, but it's quite common for fish to contract when they've been injured. It looks like big white patches, sometimes peeling and often starts out as cottony growth on the mouth (hence the name mouth fungus, but it's not a fungus it's a bacteria).
I would post pics as soon as possible and if it starts to get progressively worse start lowering the temp and find a suitable antibacterial treatment.
The only reason I sound so alarming is because columnaris can go from barely noticeable to killing your fish in a matter of a few days, so it's nothing to mess with.

If your cons were breeding or decided to pair up they'd definately beat up the odd man out. Breeding cons normally don't allow other cons in their territory.

I think it actually looks better since I have raised the temperature, what do you think it is?
