I mean come on folks. Do you really equate this hobby to that of raising children? Seriously? Take ALL the fun out of it!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats right ,I said HOBBY. Unless your earning a living with this hobby then your just a hobbyist. I know, I know, youve been doing this for 20 some odd years and your fish are the best looking around and you have a lot of experience, blah, blah, blah. Where's the joy? The excitement? Do we HAVE to be so serious about something we are supposed enjoy? Maybe.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT THIS HOBBY FOR YOU?

GO.

I like taking care of my Piranhas and watching them grow and learn my behaviors. Not a big fan of all the money I throw at this hobby but its worth it :)

I love the Karma that a tank of big happy fish bring to my house. I also love the WOW of friends visiting.

But most of all I love the fish - I just love fish!

Honestly I think this hobby gets taken to an extreme at times, but what I really love is just sitting there watching my fish, I often catch myself watching my fish tank instead of the movie I was intending to watch.

Depends what you call 'taking it so seriously'. I'm not a very serious person, but when it comes to any of my animals I take their well being very seriously. I'm anal about making sure everything is well taken care of, and when I see people putting a full grown oscar in a 30 gallon tank, or their ferret in a glass aquarium, or feeding their bird nothing but seed, etc... I can become quite serious!

For me, I just want a piece of the sea/ocean/lake/river/etc. for myself.

Well said - when life is dependant on you then you must take it seriously!

I think fish keeping is one of the hardest forms of pet care because the environment is so alien to us. The more we know then the happier our pets will be.

Good thread OP, I too can't believe how serious people take this hobby on this site. Its like a bunch of European soccer hooligans who's favorite club just lost a match. Don't get caught in the middle with a different jersey, or your going down!

To answer the question:

I like watching my fish just do what they do. Whether its chasing each other, eating, flaring, yawning, spawning, stalking prey. I also like making sure my fish have the best possible conditions I can afford.

I also like making my tanks as natural as possible. I'm not talking about whether or not the plants are fake, but rather how comfortable the fish are. I don't find it entertaining to watch a group of fish to swim around a bare tank without any cover just to show what you have. I don't care what you have or how big your tank is. I do this hobby for me.
