Depends what you call 'taking it so seriously'. I'm not a very serious person, but when it comes to any of my animals I take their well being very seriously. I'm anal about making sure everything is well taken care of, and when I see people putting a full grown oscar in a 30 gallon tank, or their ferret in a glass aquarium, or feeding their bird nothing but seed, etc... I can become quite serious!

Well said.

Have to say that I enjoy creating the tank and watching how everyone in it reacts to the surroundings. I also find it very relaxing and a great de-stressor to just sit and watch them go about their business. Heck, its kept me from killing a couple of people:naughty:, so I suppose that is something to take seriously:D. I do have to agree with the OP that the folks who feel that their way is the only way or that they are "the authority" on a particular fish, and subsequently talk down to others is very annoying. Although as much of a sarcastic *** as I am, it is often hard for me to convey my humor through any written (typed) conversations. I guess that's why my wife tells me I should proof read everything:headbang2

^ t Hizzle your avatar is hilarious .

For me it's all of the above. Watching a fish grow from 1" to 1', just simply watching them interact with each other, the joy you have when you finally find that fish you always wanted, meeting other cool people who are just as weird as you, sharing all these experiences with your kids and family, breeding your fish, and last but not least MonsterFishKeepers.com :headbang2.

I agree with the OP, some people just take the hobby to the extreme, whereas it's more of a life than a hobby. Lighten up, and just have fun.

I'm glad you made this thread. Sometimes you just have to sit back and think about why you really are in this hobby.

I mean come on folks. Do you really equate this hobby to that of raising children? Seriously? Take ALL the fun out of it!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats right ,I said HOBBY. Unless your earning a living with this hobby then your just a hobbyist. I know, I know, youve been doing this for 20 some odd years and your fish are the best looking around and you have a lot of experience, blah, blah, blah. Where's the joy? The excitement? Do we HAVE to be so serious about something we are supposed enjoy? Maybe.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT THIS HOBBY FOR YOU?

GO.
I'm not sure how you could consider people taking the hobby "too seriously". Perhaps you do not, but many people genuinely care for and love their fish and will do anything they can to keep them healthy and happy. You seem to be viewing us as extremists, but it's our money, and we simply choose to allocate a lot of it to our fish. Is there something wrong with it? Some people have cars, others have video games, or hunting, etc. For us, it's fish. If you really take the time to look into how complex and difficult many aspects of the hobby can be, such as caring for difficult species, you would see that any respectable, seasoned fish keeper would take the care of his animals seriously (or any kind of pet for that matter).

Besides, fish keeping isn't just a hobby, it's a way of life.

I love this forum and my fish. Seeing how you only have 80 posts your new here.
Its monsterfishkeepers.com..... pretty much the closest to serious fish keeping you can get. Maybe another forum would better suit you.

well said......:clap:clap:clap

Winding down at the end of the day watching my fish go about their ever unfinished business, moving sand and gravel to one side of the tank just to move it back, aimlessly chasing each other in circles around the drift wood, the exchange of flared gills, and the occasional yawn. The simple things that all cola-berate to fill up their day
These are a few of my favorite things:)

I wish people would quite throwing around post counts and join dates like it actually means something. Those are things that people use to make themselves feel superior to others. If that's your deal, then I feel for you.

This site is about passion and love for the hobby. That is where the Monster comes in. Some people's passion and love is a lot more than others, but in the end, we are all here for the same reason..... DIY!

:iagree:

MFK is more laid back than some forums I have visited, yet not too laid back.
I've checked out alot of other fish forums, but MFK does it for me.
Sometimes folks can get a little overboard, but that's the nature of the beast.
Do your best not to take this fourm personally, or too seriously.
It's the fish that matter.

If you think it's that bad here check around, you may find a forum that better suits you.
Chances are though, you'll be back.
