I enjoy this site and love my fish. I take good care of them and they are important to me. What makes me angry is when people on this site value an animals life more than a human life. It happens anytime a thread is posted about animal cruelty or sometimes fishing, hunting, etc... Now I am not supporting animal cruelty in any way but an animals life should not take precedent over a human life.

For people who just have a fish tank because they think it looks cool and it helps make the room look nicer this forum more then likely isn't for them and I can see how they can easily see that alot of us take this hobby to seriously and to the extreme. But when you take it to the next level and begin spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on one tank and its big enough for you to get in yourself or they have several tanks going at once. Or they spend hundreds of dollars on filtration then thats when you realize that this is more then just a "hobby" to you and thats when you realize that you are a true Monsterfishkeeper and that you truly do belong here.

Sorry to burst your bubble here but his is MFK. That stands for MONSTER fish keepers. The vast majority of active members on here are serious about his hobby, otherwise they wouldn't be here.

I'd say take it for what it's worth to you. I usually have a laugh at some of the over-reactions and condescending comments left by people seeing as im not very sentimental with my fish. Then I remind myself that this forum is open to the public and everyone knows it, I think that affects the way people talk to each other. Everybody wants to stay pretty safe and side with the majority, keeps them from getting on. There is always some jerk flexing on the site. It's easy to be a jerk. What are you going to do? (Kill them, that's what. With kindness. Punching and kindness.)

i love watching my bichir swim around sniffing the gravel to find their shrimp pellets. Awesome thread!

I have a little theory about geeks. I define a geek as someone capable of taking a hobby and turning it into work. That's pretty much the distinction. Of course, it's a lot of work to do water changes and what not, but when you cross the line to where you need a break from your hobby, you've entered geek territory. If you like that fact, then that's great for you. It's a matter of personal choice. For me, it's just fun but I wouldn't feel right if I didn't take excellent care of my fish. So, I overfilter the tanks, feed sparingly, do plenty of wather changes, and the like. However, I do get a lot of joy out of just turning the lights on for a few hours and chilling in front of one of the tanks (especially the 90 gallon). Never intend to breed, sell, or any of that, but I can feel my blood pressure drop just sitting there.

For me, I enjoy sitting watching my fish. I enjoy cleaning the tank, changing the water etc. Non-fish keeping friends laugh at the time I spend with my tanks, but then I ask them how much time did they spend on their quads or snomowbiles this week. It balances it out.

One of my favourite reasons to come to MFK is no matter what outlandish, insane idea I come up with to make into an aquarium. Someone here has probably done it, or is already working on it. It breeds creativity.
