Are Pleco Realy useful ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Please define "useful..."

I think the costs outweigh the benefits in this situation, so no, their not really useful (excluding bristle nose IMO) but I do really enjoy the look of the fancy Plecos like L18 L25 L114 L330 L200 and L128

To be truthful, I worry about other tankmates with Pleco when Pleco prowls around after dark. I worry other tankmates not get good rest at night. I think if like Pleco, sure, keep Pleco, but if want fish to eat uneaten food at bottom of tank, clown loach the best!

The only thing that gets rid of poop, is vacuuming the substrate. If having sand makes you vacuum more often, thus changing water more often, and thus making conditions better for your fish, then everything is right with sand.
Plecos will eat algae (among other things), they do not eat poop. I don't think anything you can buy, eats poop, including snails.

I'm growing out my common in a 75 because he is going in a pond soon.

an indoor pond, correct? plecos won't survive ohio winters outside.

every fish is useful. just because it doesn't fit your needs/wants doesn't change that. in fact, defining a fish as useless says more about you than it does the fish.
fish didn't become as they are to make you happy about your fishtank, they meet an environmental need for the locations they live(unless humans introduced them).

If you are buying fish for poop patrol, you are buying them for the wrong reasons. Treat Plecos the way you would treat any bottom dwelling Catfish... they will eat scraps, but they do create their own hefty bioload and they arent waiting around to clean any imperfection in the tank.

Well , for me , my pleco are useless , they are normal plecos so ... they are not beautiful or anything lol . I might get a Pictus catfish or a ClownLoach instead .

To me they are really worth it. My tank gets A bit of sun and if they are not cleaning the sides it gets really bad. And fast. I think more people are just using comon plecos and they need to try a bushynose pleco one that stays smaller. They are great.
