Powerheads are a MUST for pygos bra....The current keeps them healthy....Powerheads are their treadmills....But to get the best gas exchange out of any powerhead, place it just under the surface....The more surface area broken means more gas exchange....Beats any bubbler in my book...O yeah, most powerheads these days are near silent.....
Yes, I agree, powerheads are a very decent addition to your tank, I wouldn't say your P would die if you don't have one... But you should have one if your serious about having a complete tank setup.. And I don't hear my powerhead..... at all......

Powerheads are a great addition to a P tank, especialy if used with undergravel filtration.

A powerhead will circulate water throughout the aquarium reducing filtration "deadspots", the little bubbles are not needed though. any areation created by them is just because they cause a surface disruption.

When I install a powerhead i place it midway or lower, with the deflector shield angled toward the surface.

I have also found that those "bubble walls" and such cause you water to evap more quickly, so you have to add h20 more often, and clean off the lids more often. it may also effect the hardness of your h20 as the water evaps, but trace elements do not, and you add more everytime you add water.

Just opinion though

i have a black and hes like 2.5-3 inches. its in a 20 long for now but all i have is an AQ for 50gallons. should i throw a pumo in there too?

Ive kept Piranhas for years and power heads are very usefull, they make them exercise more. fish becomes more active and feeds more. Ive used Seio and Acuaclear, both very good.
:)

Red Belly's in general are a very shy skittish fish. I have 5, all around 4 to 5 inches, and they have been that way since I got them at less then an inch. I have heard that when they are adults that they tend to calm down some. When I added a powerhead, mine began to swim back and fourth in the current. It has made them a little more active but not any less shy or skittish. Good Luck

ok nice on cheers mate, if it annoys me i will just turn it of, also my piranhs are really really shy fish and they dont eat becuse they are sometimes to scared,i am moving them to a big tank soon and am not going to have any decoration it in it just gravel and a powerhead ect, will this make them less shy and swim around a bit more.

in my opinion i wuld have at least some plants in tank and a powerhead is also a good idea.

ur fish are probably skiddish because they have no furnishings in their tank. Can u just sit and relax in an emply tank. the thing with p's is that u want to reproduce their natural habbitat. i.e. amazon river systems and such. In those rivers their are alot of current, plants, and wood.

I have a 55g with an aquaclear 110, FLuval 303, and a emporor 280. My fish love the powerhead, they just sit in the current and swim their for long periods of time. the only noise u hear is my air pumps and my wet/dry filter. I love the noise from my tank. If i can sleep i lay down on the couch and driftaway 2 lala land.

So, as some of you know, I inherted an 8" RBP from a friend. When I got him the tank was bare, save for a aztec head thingy and gravel.

Bitey (the P) was skittish as hell. Very nervous. He didn't eat well (Took him almost 24 hours to eat 12 small feeders). The tank had no air, no powerhead, just a external filter.

After talking to people on here I picked up a powerhead for him. He -loves- it. He has gotten much more active and less skittish! I have also started to feed him krill mid-week to enhance color and add more to his diet. He is now a KILLING MACHINE! He finished off his last batch of feeders (10 small comet goldies) in less than 5 mins!

In my opinion the powerhead helped a ton with making him more active. He now has a current to swim into and play in (Yes, he plays!).

Other things that have helped:

Dimmed the lighting with purple celophane. Makes the tank look awesome and the lighting isn't so harsh.
