Are Red Terrors that bad?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
mbeatrice I dont care about not having tank mates for this fish anymore. I have 2 125g tanks I can use. So the rest of the Cichlids will have another tank to go into after a year or so, according to Freshwaterpredators Ill have to just make sure I plan ahead of them, there atitudes, and growth. And yes Freshwaterpredators Im so glad I was told to come here for help and insight.

When I first posted this question my issue was the fact I do like having some varriety of fish in a tank and is the Red Terror that much of a killer. But over time and the help of everyone on MFK. Im pretty set in my thinking the Terrors are going to have there own 125g to them selves. And if I get 2 out of 4 or 5 fry baby's to pare up. I will sale the rest or just give them to someone. My wife has never seen any creature have baby's and I think our 4 year old would love looking at a pretty monster yellow fish in the tank. When they breed, Ill just tell my daughter he is trying to give her kisses through the glass. LOL hehehe I remember my brothers Jaguire cichlids when they bread. They would thump the glass when I walked in his room. Id never put my hands in that water.

Eric, there's a lot to be said for the character of the individual fish. Some Festae can just be outright brutal and some can be pretty docile. Much of it depends on the individual. You are starting off with fry in a 125 so they have a ton of room and that in itself with curb most aggression. Luckily for the fry, youre actually willing to upsize tanks and make a species only tank if necessary so they'll be set.
My male Festae is in a heavily stocked 240 and he is just about 10 1/2" long now and he has no aggression issues at all. But some CAN'T be put into a community. Just gauge them as they grow and adjust as necessary.

LOL ok, Ive had the convict cichlids since they just started eating flake food, then I saw some Jack Dempseys at Petsmart that were of close size. And if anyone saw the first thread to this post I also listed that I had 4 baby Salvini Cichlids. granted everyone is of close size. Some convicts are hitting a growth spirt right now. But While browsing MFK and all the different posts. I did a search for Salvini and came across this link

LOL, what? Now I have to have only 2 fish and 2 125g tanks with only one species in it. LOL What I read there made the Salvini's sound like a mini Red Terror. And there was talk about them changing there "class" I guess.... to the Jaguar cichlid class of cichlids. at 8 inches tops I never thought they would be like a Red Terror. Is that posting wrong? LOL Just stopped by to thank everyone for there help and input and to share what I found out about 4 of the 12 fish I have in there right now. There is one female convict that really dont like the Salvini's I see her make them flinch away alot. They are the same age as the convicts but alot smaller. I guess thats there breed. Anyways. THanks again for the insight ya'll

I have one that is 2 inches that nearly killed my mota ripped it's fins nearly off saved him then I added a jag that was 4.5 inches and the festae that was 2 inches and the festae insisted that he was more dominant and attacked the jag I would say there very agressive and are in the top 10 and if your looking to breed them it's very hard because festae normally kill their mates but good luck

a 125 is a great size tank for growing some out. make sure to provide caves, hiding spots, line of sight breakers and that will also help a ton! ive raised quite a few festae. imo they are pretty shy when young but after the 6 inch mark youl really see some agression. by then youl see the dom male in the tank as well. he will be a prick lol. good luck with your new youngsters. keep us posted!

No dude, Salvinis are aggressive but don't require a species only tank...at least not in my experience. They should be just fine if you keep tank mates that have similar aggression levels. My only concern with the tank mates you listed is that the Dempseys won't be able to keep the growth rate and will get attacked as convicts and salvinis tend to grow much faster.
