Red = 3 letters, orange = 6

One syllable, two syllables respectively. Saves wearing out of tongue.:ROFL:

Maybe the scientist's see color, like the dog who saw the colors in a rainbow. :D

im going to guess that originally fish that were similar (ex. red devil, midas) were originally grouped under one name and eventually became completely different species therefore awarding different names to one fish while the other kept the original name.

Sounds confusing but makes sense in my head. :D

I'm convinced they are afraid to use the word orange. It's true in all fields of study, whether trees, insects or algae, orange things are called red. It's always bothered me.

I love when i show a friend my fish and they ask"what is that fish"I answer "that is a red bay snook"there reply"looks orange to me",errrrr

It may just be a southern thing, but around here, most people pronounce "orange" more like "ornge", so it's only one syllable...

I've always felt that way about orange juice.

True. And yet some South'ners will will pronounce some single syllable words with two syllables. Fence for example is pronounced feeyance. My daughter was born in south Texas and still has a pretty heavy accent though she only lived there 3 years!

Maybe its to make Oranges that much more special? and it's all propaganda and a conspiracy!.. but seriosuely... good point.. odd question... and not sure i wanna ask the OP how this ephiphamy came to be.
