As many of us know, forum's activity has declined majorly over the years. This is majorly due to other ways of getting information around in similar platforms like Facebook groups, Instagram groups, Reddit communities, etc. Based on your experiences are forums better or Social Media sites and groups? Please say why if you can because i'm sure this forum loves a juicy discussion!

Think here is a bit better. There a few good groups there though. More correct concentrated info. Think on social media there’s a lot of dumping of info. Hard to get the right info. That’s just me.

Most of the groups I have seen seem to be glorified photo galleries with very little discussion and hardly any explanation of the photos that are posted.

Facebook is where information goes to die. I am not a member on any social media. As far as I can tell, what they mostly do is empower idiots and spread misinformation. However, if I had a business I would be on every social media site possible selling to anybody I could.

Things change over time but not always for the better.

You do realize you will get a very biased response by posting this question on an active fish forum? Post it on a social media site and the answers will be the opposite.

I would love to see an official MFK Instagram page, I think that could drum up a lot of forum activity

More than enough content on here to share and I’m sure many members would be willing to allow their photos/videos to be used, don’t think it is utilized to this forums advantage

I like the old school forum layout. Very familiar to me. I used to have a Facebook, but never was very active. I mostly used it to keep track of my close friends as we all spread throughout the country/world after high school/college.

There's an element of anonymity here that I enjoy. I use an alias, no one here knows my real name except those with whom I've had fishy dealings. Imo Facebook, Instagram and the like seem to be mostly vanity based boasting platforms, where people seek adoration and attention for whatever reason. There's an element of that here, but I've seen that most know-it-alls and braggarts become bored with our detail-oriented and analytical approach to fishy business and subsequently don't stick around long. For dedicated members of the mfk community, just the fact that you join this site and log in everyday, follow the rules, and stay abreast of all the activity across the boards entails a level of sincerity to the hobby that your average Facebook fish enthusiasts lack, and more often just like to click the like button when they see a pretty fish. Here we want to know what you're feeding that fish, water parameters, tankmates, filtration setup and of course....HOW BIG IS THAT TANK!?!?!?

hopefully this site and others like it continue to thrive. i get on the FB but out of sheer boredom after looking at the new content here...

i must confess IG gets me sucked into vendors selling fish ??

it’s more social i suppose vs informative -

Cheers All!

I’ll be straight to the point, social media groups is where you’ll find a lot of ignorant asinine people spouting nonsense about stuff they know nothing or very little about. Forums are the same except a lower level, less ignorance is spread, less nonsense spoken, fewer stupid people. I find that most fish forums are mediocre, the only awful forum I’ve found is fishlore, this forum stands out above the rest and no social media group you can show me will ever be better than this simply because of how the two different platforms are laid out and what ideals that this forum was built upon.
