Are spiny eels actual eels?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^^ +1 All true eels are either brackish or SW. I read somewhere that spinies are more closely related to loaches, but I never found out whether or not that was true (they do look somewhat similar, though).

No, they definitely are not, they are considered fish. The eels that you would catch in the wild are considered to be REAL eels, but not the ones you find in stores.

What are you saying? If you get a snowflake eel from a fish store its not a real eel?

Your incorrect, yes the spiney eels are not true eels but if I go to a store and buy a snowflake eel or a green moray they are true eels and just because there from a store doesn't mean there not true eels

^^ I think you forgot to insert a "not" in that last sentence, but other than that, I agree. And I also dislike the statement "No, they definitely are not, they are considered fish" considering eels are also fish.

Spiny eels are fish, true eels don't have spines.

Thanks all corrected now:D

The best way to think about is if there are side fins then it's not an eel it's a fish.

Eels in the genus Anguilla have pectoral fins and some spend quite some time in freshwater.
