If you have hard alkaline water, you could start a small colony of Tanganyika shell dwellers like neolamprologus multifasciatus or similis or a single pair of caudopunctatus

This will highly depend on your tap water source. If soft, acidic and low ph, you could do either ram or apistogramma with a small school of cardinal tetra or something small to that nature.

I highly recommend kribs, I know, not an American cichlid but they are very hardy, peaceful, and entertaining. A lot to choose from too in terms of species.
Those are gorgeous! I've been considering kribs but hesitate a bit as I hear conflicting information about aggression. Where do you find those different species online in the US?
This, and as for aggression I'm honestly not sure what people are doing that gets them aggressive, I have P. pulcher with platies and P. kribensis with a bunch of tetras/rasboras/limia/a pleco. The pleco actually chases the kribensis more. They generally prefer water in the 70s (preferably the lower end) and are prone to bloat if you feed too much fatty protein/keep them too hot. The pulcher is at about 70-72 and the kribensis are around 78. Both at a pH of around 7.8 give or take 0.2.
How up to date is the site? I see it's hosted on Word Press and has a Hotmail address which is pretty outdated.
