Im moving to NC where rays are legal and thought I might like to get some for an outdoor patio pond setup. Well I started my research and got concerned because of the whole venom thing. If it was just me I wouldnt be worried, but I have dogs and more importantly grand daughters. If there are non venomous rays Id love to move forward with this because I really like how the rays look. Anyone?

i am almost 99.9% sure you will not find one. stingrays have a gland that secretes the venom and the barb(which sheds) is what injects it... this is one of the things that makes a stingray a sting ray....

if someone gets stung they are probably not going to die... what happened to steve irwin was a freak accident.... if you want one just get it, and teach your granddaughters about them... sounds like you could have a really nice pond!! GOOD LUCK!!

I will probably still get some but I am going to have to build a "safe pond". Afterall I am the guy whose dog was bitten by my red devil. lol

If you are worried about the barb, make a saltwater set up and look into some of the rays/skates that do not have barbs/venom.

LMAO:ROFL:poor dog....

also maybe there is a small type of skate you can keep that is saltwater(may not have venom, but have some spines that can make you hurt anyway, either way he wanted sting rays and i'm sorry but there is no such thing as a sting ray without venom.... like i said it's what makes them a sting ray!! sting rays and skates are related so if it doesn't have a stinger then it is a Skate! sting ray = stinger/ skate = no stinger... hope this helps...

now if you want skates, the smallest i think(not sure) gets 20" long max... they have teeth though and spines along there backs... so, no venom stinger, but a whole other arsenal... its a common skate found from Nova Scotia down to north carolina.. they like colder water 70 degrees tops...

honestly i think your best bet will be sting rays....

with that said though, if your pond is big enough for sting rays, it is big enough for...... Red tail catfish and Tiger Shovelnose catfish!!!! FTW!!!:headbang2 no stingers and you will have the sickest fresh water predators in your back yard!!.... just watch the dog because he could get eaten..lol!! heck even if you do get sting ray a tiger shovel nose could be a nice editioin!!

good luck guy!!

Actually there are several species of saltwater rays that are not STINGrays and not skates. Most skates have the same grinding plate style teeth as rays.

not to be a **** but other than manta rays and other rays which doesn't have "sting" in its name.... yes there are rays, but what i am saying is, there is no "sting" rays without a stinger...

hmm who to listen to... he said "rays"... i was talking about sting rays... like i said enlighten, i am a learner and would like more knowledge from you our your groupie who followed through with non information just a stupid comment.... bio major here would like to go into my sr. level shark and marine classes with as much personal knowledge as possible....

i was talking about sting rays vs skates the whole time... are there species of "rays" that are small enough for his pond??

like his question asked... what "sting rays" are not venomous...

Maybe you should go back and read it again? The only person that said "sting" here was you. Bio major but no reading comprehension skills. :screwy:
