Are there different types of managuense cichlid?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Excellent, most young managuense IME are dark at small sizes especially when kept with other fish. Can't wait to see how it grows

Most the young ones I see are a golden brown. Maybe its where my LFS gets them from or is that the way all "fry" look before they get the juvie colors. This is what Juvies look like in my LFS.

here's my brand new jag I got a few weeks ago. was very skinny and dark when I got it. I got 2 at the time because I typically try to learn personalities then rehome the other (though normally I get 5 of one fish) first jag got eaten by day 2, I was a bit surprised since they were questionable bite size, but my fish normally wouldn't bother unless they were smaller and are well fed anyways. this poor guy was super beat up and was separated and treated for his wounds and then put back 3 days later but with a divider. I was very confused because I wanted a red eyed jag, and picked the two with the red eyes, but their eyes turned gold, then yellow. now this one's eyes are maroon most of the time. since he seems a whole lot happier, the colors are typically all yellow right now, which I'm not a huge fan of but when it's time to eat, the fins are black and vibrant and the eyes bright. no clue what color variation I'll end up with, but it's still a beautiful fish. already insanely aggressive, it's pretty precious. and yes, prepared to have a species only tank when the time comes

Congrats on the new Jag. I plan on eventually having a tank just for him. I may keep my wild caught Oscar with him. My O is the nasty fish I have ever seen in my life. I saw him put a fish 2/3rds his size on the bottom of the tank and shake it like a dog till it was dead and then swam away. My jaw hit the floor. I don't care for aggressiveness I just go for looks so if they don't get along then I plan on having a tank just for the jag and keeping him as a wet pet. I don't want to have to worry about who will get eaten.

The eye color on mine changes as well black, orange maroon, yellow. I guess it is a mood thing.
