A lot of places acclimate fish that are not supposed to be a mime type of water into another. I was told once that I could put a snowflake Morayeel into fresh water, brackish, or salt water. This is true if you want a dead eel.

Not if you aclimate them proporly.

I do not want to play games when i have fish.. i would rather pass it up then bring it home to the wrong environment.. this was a Moray eel but i just do not know the species name.. if i get it i would set up the brackish tank for it.. but i just do not want to go to salt yet..{i do but not yet} thanks:D

If this eel has gold spots it is most likely Gymnothrax tile. You can google this and get some good pics to see if it matches.

True eels are creatures that have life cycles similar to butterflies. They are born in one form and change into what we know as eels, like caterpillars chang into butterflies. There are true eels that also look like fish. They are all brackish to marine. I have only heard of a couple species that are fresh water they are not morays and get extremely large like the American and European eels.

I have had great success with the G. Tile in my brackish tank and was fortunate (and unfortunate) enough to see one of them holding eggs. They are great fish to keep and do BEST in close to full sea strength parameters. I had up to four and the most important thing for comfort for these guys are caves. And not just open spaces either, they like crevices over open dark places. This was the demise of my brackish tank. One died in decor of my tank and I did not know it until the rest of the fish died from the toxins from the deceased.

If you search my name, you'll see pics of my brackish tank with the eels... and even the death trap!

This summer I am going to set up the tank again, this time using lava rocks with crevices (NOT CAVES) and will try to get them to produce eggs again.

Better yet, look in my personal Gallery to see pics! MAN I miss that tank. Right now, it's filled with their feeders... brackish bred mollies.

Thank you for all your information and very sorry things went wrong for you however you definitly sound like you were making great strides with eggs etc.. just unfortunate that you lost one and it condemned the tank.. Good luck to you with your new tank on the way..sounds like you have everything figured out and it will be awesome..;)

I was considering a "fresh water" eel so they said at the LFS but now that i think about it i'd rather pass it up. thanks for the info!

yes i am passing it up for now too.. i want to learn more about them and see if they are compatable with the other fish i have.. ;)

Since Gymnothorax tile are brackish any fish small enough to fit in their mouths are the only problem. These get to be max 24 inches and their mouths are not really large. Morays in general for some reason tend to go on hunger strikes to the point of killing themselves. If you got them eating aand keep the water nice and clean they can live a long time.

I kind of looked at them as species only tank fish.. I know they are delicate but i did not know they were hard keepers .. i think i will pass on getting one for now.. right now i have gymnotus ??? knife that is delicate and driving me crazy as to whether he is eating . or what he is eating or what he is suppose to be eating etc. and until i find out exactly what he is i have enough going on ;) but those eels are awesome.. :grinno:
