Are there freshwater eels?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Actually the Gymnothorax tile and a few other morays are found to mostly to inhabit brackish waters only. The spiny. tire track, and fire eels are fish they are not true eels. The only true eels that are fresh water get way too large for the average person to keep. The American and European eels are true fresh water species but they get very large!!!

The difference between true eels and fish is that eels are born in a different form before changing over into what we recognize as eels where fish are just born small and grow larger. There are true eels that actually look like fish called tarpons.

So that is the key...fire eels are freshwater simply because they are not true eels.. thanks!!

I agree with you that there are species of moray that are found commonly in brackish water, but as I recall, non belong in freshwater permentely, correct?

From what I know seeing American eels while snorkeling and diving, I would not consider them "true freshwater eels." They come into freshwater and brackish water environments to spawn, and return to marine waters later. I've seen quite a few large (4 feet +) American eels while snorkeling pretty close to shore; such a cool sight!! :)

Thats really nice as long as you can ID something that is 4 feet long right away..:D

True enough the American eels do swim all the way to the Sargasso Sea to spawn 1/2 way around the world but most of their lives are in fresh water like the European eels are in the Loch series of lakes which are fresh water. I do not know if the American eels can move around on land but the European ones can. Just not sure how long they can live out of water.
