are these chichlids rare?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its a huge ass public lake and the authorities have known about the cichlids for decades. They pose no threat to the biodiversity coz victoria is a cold part of aus and the natural water systems are way too cold for cichlids to live in. If they got into a natural river they would just die. Also the waterways around victoria are plagued with carp anyway

can someone go and take some pics? I'd like to see that? or some of the fish that have been captured.

this lake or dam that gumpy is talking about is true i live about 30 mins away and have caught convicts, red devils,Pseudotropheus zebras, plus there is a few other species that have been suspected to be cross breeding with different species.
one of these cross species was a cross between a Pseudotropheus zebra and something else, Instead of being blue with faint black stripes it had red fins and had purple body with a blue head it was the most colorful fish i have seen.
When the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) did a research on hazlewood pondage about 2 years ago they said there was a species of fish yet to be identified but they were led to believe it might have been a cross.
I spoke to a fish biology student from the local university who said it isnt unheard of for fish to cross breed in the wild he also told me that if the water temp is perfect and also the conditions it would most lickly be true for fish to cross breed, I showed him this fish i caught (he is also a tropical fish keeper) and said he had never seen this fish before,
It now resides in his tank were he has been studying this fish he also noted that for a wild fish they arnt very timid when put in a tank and said they seem very aggresive towards humans when they dont have that much contact with people.
I used to have a zebra that i bought from my LFS and when i placed this other cross zebra in its tank my zebra wouldnt come out for 20 mins but when it did it was instantly killed by the much smaller cross zebra it was a very aggresive atack.
So far to date it has killed 1 blue gourami 3 other zebra's and also a much larger red devil

nope my lfs sell firemouths for $2.50. not sure about the other never looked at the price but no more than $7

all of those can be caught in ponds and streams down here...along with five star general...oscars, elec yellows...you can catch almost any CA cichlid down here...so no i never pay money for them but i do sell the wild caught ones to a family owned fish store for profit(cause there are idiots down here willing to pay...so why not profit off there stupidity:ROFL: )

abit of a thread dig, but iv been there fishing about 4-5 times great fun.
easily catch 100-200 fish.
lots of devils, some very very pretty devils bright red ones, also one that i kept and had as a pet for about 6-8months had slight green in the face brown/red body and stripes down him, a mate also has one although his is large and its pretty much black with white strips almost like a convict but the same of a devil, loverly fish but very very aggresive.
as mentioned, some sort of zebra which are very pretty also, some really nice convicts and the tialpia. guppies can also be neated if u are fast which seemed to have crossed with the local mosquito population.
its mostly all devils, but very very cool you can look into the water and see dominate zebra's defending their little caves etc against others.
