One of each really...

and I'm going to throw a pleco into the mix, to take care of any algae issues/etc.

hmm..i cant think of many.
plecos are problem makers...they suck on bottom feeders.

Oh?

If thats the case, maybe I'll just get a few 4" pictus. 2" cichla won't outgrow a 4" pictus fast enough to make it food, right? What would be the minimum number of pictus to consider it a 'group'?

Those shovelnose cats get bigger than I want for a cat..

Without a pleco, won't the algae get out of control?

itlll take maybe 6-8 months before the cichla see the pictus as food.maybe less.
try at least 4 pictus.
i was going to suggest shovelnose or something similar...the big cats are the only cats that go along with cichla because of growth.
i have no pleco,no algae problems.
regular water changes does the trick.

Just got back from trading my fish in at the lfs, and picked up 8 silver dollars. He didn't see lima shovelnose on his stock list, but a 3.5" tiger shovelnose was $20.

I'm going to keep looking for a lima though, as the tigers get alot bigger...right?

yeah, TSN have the potential to get 4'

LSN will be great if you get one large enough. If you can get something that gets up to 24", try a Leiarius pictus or Brachyplatystoma juruense.
