Are These WC Rio Nanay Angels...? UPDATE!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I took these photos a few weeks ago so the juvies are a bit bigger and showing more color now. I attached a vid of a pair on youtube (not mine) that has the same gold coloring on the body as the one I have does. The juvies I am raising all show a bit darker colors overall with their spots and in their fins but I have seen pictures of the adults they were bred from and they are legit and think it is just variation and different stages of maturity.

These are the original angels I bought simply as peru altums but was told they would color up like nanays (at the time I did not really know of the difference between the two to make an opinion on what I was buying). Notice how the dorsal spot is totally different and the more typical scalare coloring pattern100_4135.JPG . These fish were adults when I purchased them and eventually some of them developed some small spots on the back and a brown tinge to the back but none of the other colors and patterns that the nanays display

Thank you for posting these!!! Lovely angels you have!

The two angels that I don’t believe are Nanay’s are very similar to your “Peru Altums”. Still beautiful but not Nanay’s.

Overall I’m sill pleased with my gamble. My angels were only 25 a piece plus shipping and taxes and over the 8 fish that works out to about 32 each.

I can’t wait till they put on more size and colour like yours!

Very beautiful fish from both of you. Now I'm very confused as to what the fish I see labelled as "rio nanay altums" for sale around here actually are. There's about 4 variations on the name that supposed rio Nanays are sold as and now I've got no idea of what they actually are as they don't look quite like the pics here.

Could you take a picture of them sometime and post it!? I’d be really curious to see what they look like.

I did contact the vender I purchased this group from regarding the few that look different from the others and I was assured that they were all collected at the same time/same spot. I believe him as he is very reputable and it wouldn’t be worth his time to pass off wc fish that weren’t not actually wc.

I think at the end of the day due to breeding, ect there are probably a few different types of looks to the scarle living there and most are ledgit Rio Nanay’s in the sense that’s where they are caught......but I think most of us wanting them are really hoping for the type that somewhat resemble the altums when we purchase them.

I don't actually own any, just see them for sale occasionally. not sure if the shopkeepers like customers taking pics but I will try to sneak a few photos next time I see some. They are usually called either "Peru altums" , "rio nanay altums" or just "rio nanay Angels"
The other confusing thing is the price difference between shops for what's supposed the same species, anywhere from $25 to $100 Aussie dollars
True altums are extremely rare to see for sale here, i couldn't even consider buying any at the cost of the, as much as I'd like to one day. A lot of Vietnamese people run shops here and they are the guys importing this sort of thing, they know what's quality. At the average store you normally see a tank of "assorted Angels" and that's it.

Oh I know you don’t own any yourself! I’d just like to see what the angels others are selling under the Rio Nanay or Peru name.

image.jpg Hi N NoNameLeft , it took a while but here's a pic of what is being sold as a rio nanay angel in a good LFS here, pic is from their website but is an actual photo of a fish from their tanks.
$20 AUD is very cheap here but they are tiny, body not much bigger than a thumbnail.
What do you think it is? I quite like them as just a natural looking angel but not sure they are the real thing.

No way to tell at that size really. You can try asking the source of the fish from your LFS & see what kind of info they will offer up, but that's about the best you can do.
