Are they pets or collections ?

well the way i see it.. my dogs are companions, not pets. And my snakes and my fish are pets and most of them have names.

i collect antique sewing machines, and M&M's figurines.
 
I think it really depends on the fish, I have a snowflake eel along with a yellowtail damsel in my saltwater tank. The eel always comes out when someone is near the tank and from time to time gets excited enough where he's flying around the tank- he's a pet.
The damsel who darts around looking for food and tries to evade me, well, I'll never have the same attachment to him.
I think whether they're pets or not all depends on their personality
 
i think if we all had big enough tanks to get in with the fish, you'd see a whole lot more characteristics. my 20" mbu loved when my hands were in the tank. he'd rub my arm all over, i could hold him, pet him, lift him out of the water, he even turned on his side so i could pull a stuck clam shell out of his arse. i cried for days when he passed!! if someone riuns a collection, you can sue for compensation. if someone ruins/ hurts my fish, i'll bury them in the back yard with my old buddy "iggy" mbu. however, his passing was nothing compared to my 13yr old pit passing. but i'd say part of the family, then pets.
 
I like fish, but I don't get emotionally attach to them. I guess they're more of a collection to me than a pet.
 
Fully pets of course I give the same if not more affection to fish than I do to dogs.

When I first started in the hobby I used to name my fish then I realized Its pretty silly and I just call them by their scientific names, after all it would be pretty hard to differentiate 10 neon tetras that look alike.
 
I would say my community tank are the pet fish for the visitors to view and enjoy. Then the other tanks are the collection tanks for odd and ornamental fish, the ones that need special attention and care.
