Are they pets or collections ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i spend alot of time with my fish but i just cant seem to 'connect' with them like i can with my cats and like i did with my 2 dogs (RIP)..

I spend a lot of time maintaining the tank and what not, but i still see them as a valuable collection rather than pets.
I could never sell my dog, but if worst comes to worst the first thing i would liquidate is the fish.

They are something i admire and appreciate.

My fish are pets and i treat them as part of the family. I have 4 tanks, probably about 50 fish in total. Every single one is the result of working at a chain store, and picking them in a sick/injured state, or something that shouldn't have been there in the first place. Every one (excluding fry) has a story and history with me. I dont have display tanks, my tanks are full of PVC and other unsightly decor. I do religious water changes and drop good money on them. Saying they are a collection would be to put them down...they are more than that to me. I would never be someone to trade or sell fish back to a LFS...

BTW i have mostly cichlids, cats, polypterus, and a few community.

Very tough question. I see my fish as part of the family but, like Repz said, I could never bring myself to sell my dog. Then again, it's also hard for me to get rid of a fish... Therefore, pets it is.

hmmm, i would think im between the two ! although i take as much care with my small fish as i do with the monsters !
but i dont really name them in fact only 2 of my fish have a so cal name and thets my 1 1/2 ft comon plec is known as mr fish and my lobster is named zoigberg but these are what my freinds etc have called them and ive just stuck with it !!
i feel that all animals in your care deserve the best living conditions but other than that its up to the owner whether they choose to have a pet or a collection of well kept fish !!

The inherit problem I run into in all of this is the need to keep going. What I always end up doing is getting something that's ok but fills space until I find what I want and replace accordingly. When I tore down my 80 gallon FW tank it broke my heart to rehouse my loaches and BGK at the local store. This out of maybe 50 different tankmates they were with. As it is now, I ran into the problem of my tessalate eel. The decision boiled down to, "These fish are all cool but are all bite sized and would most likely get eaten. Then again, I lose 5 fish that are cool for one fish I really want." Now I have the eel and I would be very remiss to have to rehouse it. I still feel the affect of trading the rest of the fish in and miss them much.
I suppose in the end it boils down to what you want to make of it. I'd love to take the pet relationship. Love them, pet them, feed them, sit on the couch with them on your lap... but I still feel the drive to get another tank set up with something else in it. I think most of us love our fish the same way a coke user loves coke.

I regard them as pets and give them names..

Arthur 13" IT

Stigge 6" IT

Margot 15-16" Silver aro

Romeo 14" Silver aro

13" xingu1 Pike is usually called "STOP STEALING FOOD FROM STIGGE YOU LITTLE PIECE OF XXXX OR I WILL PERSONALLY REACH DOWN AND STRANGLE YOU YOU FXXX!!! HONEY, HAND ME THOSE SCISSORS AAAAAARRRGHT!!! STOP HIDING BEHIND THE DRIFTWOOD YOU DXXX..

and so on.. I have no other choice than to regard them as pets since I am pretty much the only one to appreciate them.. the hobby isn't big over here and therefore it would be kind of counter-productive having a collection of anything and you are the only one enjoying it.. :P

I am just a sucker for my fish..

anyone want a 13" pike btw?

Definately as pets. I spent about 30 minutes digging a whole in my back yard for one of my fish that died the other day. His name was rocket man. Is that love or what! Don't lie. You think I'm crazy. Im guessing most people would just trash them etc. I do like collecting different type of fish as well though.
