Are they pets or collections ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I see them as both . But more a pet than collection. You see before i didnt name my fish I just had a oscar, a midas, etc. Then for some reason or another I started lose my fish 1 by 1 once 2 by 2. basically I was left with 1 female midas. Then I started to notice how she swim back and forth when I got near the tank or when she would charge the glass when daughter or friends got near she would even try to nip their fingers when they played at the top of the tank. I then gave her name then realized fish were pets to.
Now a day when I get fish I try to get more than 1 normally 3 (THE COLLECTION), then after awhile I pick the top 1 out of the group (THE PET).

i consider my fish living in their own invironment i feed them only because i have 2 after i set up the tank and aside from maitenence i leave them be and am purely a spectator they are apart of the house not my pets and i dont collect them i run a hotel at times they come and go

they are a little of both.. some i care about.. some i dont really care about.. yeah.. i think thats about as much as i understand it..

they are all mere collections the only fish i really considered as a pet is gone to the tank above in the sky.
all my fish get enuff attention as i like to sit and look at what i have done so far and whether everything is going on fine and all ,
i take pics of 'em growing ,
observe what physical changes are taking place as they grow ,
observe their behavior at different times of the day and situations,
clean their poop and pee and leftover food as i clean the tanks once in a week,
always thinking which kind of fish or which kind of setup i am missing and how i can accommodate a few more fish,
and i manage 12 tanks and 2 900g ponds

I would say a bit of both. I want to have a excellent collection of fish as pets. I take great pride in being able to raise my fish from babies to monsters. I also take it to heart when something goes wrong with my fish. So while i enjoy collecting fish the time it takes to care for and raise them makes them my pets too.

I guess I'd lean more towards them as being pets. I had a small cherry barb (1") get trapped in my corner overflow on the 165g tank. It has a heavy canopy and I just about broke the tank trying to hold it up with one hand and fishing around with the net in the other trying to get a $2 fish out. Just because I didn't want the little bugger to die. I don't know if I'm more soft hearted or soft headed.

my fish are my pets no doubt about it, wouldnt give them up for anything

I think of my fish as beautiful creatures that I choose to keep in my home for my enjoyment; however, they are not pets.

I define pets as animals that are totally dependent on me for survival, but most importantly, they demonstrate complex levels of physical and emotional interaction with me and I with them.

Currently I have two dogs (Goldendoodles), a cat, and four tanks full of large African Cichlids. The fish show increased physical activity and are capable of identifying the source of food (me) when they are hungry. The only emotion I observe is fear; that varies from terror (sudden noise) to trust (virtually no fear) when they eat out of my hand or let me touch them. Those are generally categorized as basic survival instincts.

The dogs on the other hand; demonstrate a full range of two-way interaction with humans.

For example:
- They seek affection
- They enjoy playing
- They demonstrate anger and sadness
- They show happiness not related to food
- They touch and enjoy being touched
- They are sad when their owner is disappointed with them and happy when their owner is pleased
- They sense their owners negative emotions and either whimper or offer comfort by snuggling
- They will protect their owner and willingly give up their life for them

Fish are not pets.

Get an Oscar or some other SA/CA cichlids and you'll see ranges of emotion. I would bet that many O owners on MFK have seen their fish display a handful of the interactions you described dogs as having.

Some of my fish are purely family pets and my xb aro is what I identify as collectors pet.:)
