Are we cruel!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I can say this has crossed my mind from time to time. I think it really depends on what angle you choose to look at it from.

im a bit lukewarm on this issue. i do my best to provide a healthy safe home for my fish. my fish seem happy to me. to those people who would still call me cruel for keeping fish, i say that its my prerogative to keep fish. i can and want to so i do. i take moral recompense in the fact that if these fish could, they would eat me.

and if they really want to escape, they can evolve complex thought, design and build breathing apparatus and weapons, and make a jailbreak from my tank. they are always abolutely free to do that.

Survival rates in the wild are very low.

Nature is an absolutely ruthless b!tch, you're right that based on survival rates alone the hobby is probably at least a fair alternative, even with trouble-species like clown loaches or silver sharks that are very rarely housed properly.

I don't think fish even understand the concept of "cruel", or "safe" either. Your fish have no idea they're safe from predators or that their food supply is guaranteed. If they have adequate space and cover, sufficient food, clean water and aren't being harassed by other tankmates them IMO there's nothing cruel about it.

Perfect logic! I'm sold on this thought process!

Agreed. Fear or security seems to be hardwired into their DNA. That's why when you approach the tank to feed them, some fish swim towards you thinking "Yay! Food!" while others that you've had for years dart for cover screaming, "He's coming to kill us!"

I honestly think it's only a matter of time before the hobby gets banned anyway, as the left wing culture grows, everyone is a victim, and that includes fish from the pc brigade.

I'll enjoy my fish while I can, as an intermediate fishkeeper, I strive to provide the best conditions possible, but its a sad fact that probably the majority of fish out there are kept in unsuitable conditions
