save up. buy setups in bits and peices rather than spending 2 grand at once.

I always buy new, so its even more important for me to save up. (not a fan of other people's used stuff). I like sparkly new stuff LOL.

also, planning ahead helps. For example, I bought a rena XP3 on sale for a good price from my LFS before I even had a house to put my 150g tank in :)

once the intial setup cost is done, the hobby really isn't that expensive.

fish are relatively cheap, so its food if you buy in bulk. utilities aren't too bad but can be more expensive in different areas.

i don't consider dropping 200-500 bucks on a fish relatively cheap......i see alot of people on here do that

i started it all with a 10 gallon on a credit card from walmart. since then my front room looks like a local fish store. lol i breed alot of fish as a hobby inside of a hobby and make money back that way. i also save on feeders that way. i spend alot of money on fish and supplies when it comes down to it. no doubt about that. but it makes me happy and its something for me to do other than go out and cause trouble. im 21 and id much rather be home with my animals (not just fish) than out at the bar or doing something stupid. but i have done without on several occasions to feed and take proper care of my fish. but i dont mind it one bit.

I think it also depends on lifestyles as well.

I don't drink, I don't drive (I use my cities public transit, so no car insurance bills), I don't smoke, I don't have a television (just the internet), I don't have kids, and I never really buy much else.

Call me a loser but I save a load of money by not indulging in some of the things other people do :)

I'm not rich by any means, but I have a great job and I live in an area that is probably well below my income level. I own 1/3 acre but it's not in the best neighborhood. I don't splurge on every fancy new gadget that I see, and I'm just as happy eating Mac N Cheese as I am eating a big fat rib-eye steak (well, almost. heheh). I drive a paid off 10 year old vehicle that runs good and gets me from point A to B reliably.

This affords my family a decent disposable income each month though. If my boys need new clothes or want some new transformer toy, i can go get it for them without worrying about how much money is in the bank. My wife doesn't really have a problem with me going out and dropping a couple hundred dollars on something I want for any of my numerous hobbies (I have Hobby Attention Defecit Disorder ). If I'm going to spend more than 500 in 1 shot though, I at least give her a heads' up first. :grinno:

Wasn't always this good though. It's taken me a good 6 or 8 years working up through the ranks to get where I am now. I've had the "Which is more important, gas or food?" debates before. As others have said, start small and keep working up. before you know it you'll be looking back at your 10g and 20g tanks and remembering the simpler days. :headbang2

The other day I was in the fish store and saw a beautiful 600 gallon fish tank. I bought it on the spot, loaded it into my $100k SUV and drove to the ghetto and smashed it in from of poor people because i was bored. ...................................

LOL JK, Fish are an expensive hobby, Rich, average or poor there is always a way to get what you want you just might have to look harder if your not willing to pay.

i wish! i dont have big fancy tanks either. i have a little 3 gal which will soon house a beautiful half-moon betta, a 25 gal which has 3 snails in, and will soon be home to 6 glowlight tetra, 6 gold tetra, 6 cardinal tetra, 6 harlequin rasbora and a couple (or 3) panda cory's. then a 30 gal which has 4 dalmation mollies, 2 red honey gourami, 2 bronze cory, 2 peppered cory, 5 cherry barbs, 1 bristlenose plec and 4 apple snails. even if i had the money to buy bigger tanks, i couldnt as i have no space for them

You're the one with the youtube videos putting stingrays in blenders and hitting liquify to see what pretty colors end up on the glass too, aren't ya? :naughty:

I agree. It's an expensive hobby but you have to pay to play.

I'm by no means rich. But I buy used equipment, when I want a fish I shop around for hobbyist prices on fish.

Plus I don't drink or smoke, so have alot more I can do with my money. Because if you think about it at 10$ a pack. a pack a day, and just drinking on the week ends will add up to 5000$/year easy. (Canadian prices) So really people pick their own poison.

I don't even look at the prices at aquarium stores anymore. Tank prices are ridiculous, and with all the extra one on the market it's far easier to get good deals. I just wish the rest of the world had the prices on tanks SoCal does.

tax returns let me get better equipment and all my expendable cash goes towards food or getting a new fish
