I couldn't agree more. The overuse/misuse of many medications is really scary on so many levels. Well put! I think these kind of discussions are incredibly valuable and would like to see/participate more in them!

K now I understand where your coming from on that. Kinda like the beach warmer water on the shallows But is it proven that the rays stay in the colder waters for long periods at a time or are they always trying to stay near the shallows?DavidW;2869598; said:so true
Dodger, regarding river temperatures, just google 'water temp for xingu' or 'tapajos ' or Colombia or whatever and after a lot of digging you can find the water temp ranges, and the readings given are usually for surface temperatures not bottom temperatures, they are all similar. I think some people confuse air temperatures with water temperatures, believe me, having swam in the Amazon, it is frequently cooler that you might expect ( I could explain why) , although never too uncomfortable
my next set up was not going to be really heated.... i was gonna do a shallow end under HID lighting along with UVA/UVB spectrum bulbs and then have the main pond deeper and kept cooler... this is to allow the rays to pick where they want to be... also the water change thing i could not agree more on... people complain and cry when they should be flushing there tank with water changes... all comes back to my kiss thread

I have thought about some of this stuff before (day/night heat changes/ over dose/ over med use) but I always though naw trust the "masters", but know you have given me written proof that isnt over the top or anything just basic truth with every back up. I would love to hear more "rants" like this from you.
so i see you keep the high end temp at 78-80, and low of 72. what would you suggest as to a constant temp, if one was not setting up a variable temp setup?

most folks use 2 heaters anway, as a redundant backup, so instead of both at the same temp use one high and one low. otherwise the mean 76F-78F is a good constant for healthy rays, 80F as a high end constant, Heaters are not expensive.
