20 years later what? Dude I have no friends.

thars wat fishkeeping does ,but.....its better than hangin out with a bunch of angry ,drunk, know-it -alls at the local pub... thats why I come" here"....:)

My list of friends I see on weekly basis has been reduced to husbands of my wife's friends and fathers of my son's friends. And of course some of my coworkers.

Facebook friends to me are nice guys that I like to hang out with but have no time.

Ya I know exactly where your coming from. When I start talking fish my wife just rolls her eyes and pretends she listening. My buddy which is also my boss is the only other person I know that is a fish keeper so if we're not talking about work usually it's fish/tanks even on the weekends. Lol. My wife usually just laughs and says u talking to your fish buddy again. Just wish more people I knew had fish too.

Good call on this thread; this situation is probably something that people from this site most likely run into more often than not.

I've had to check myself a time or two from talking someone's ear off about fish keeping. It can be difficult sometimes because essentially I study fish and fish keeping, and have been for the last few years. I think most of us do, all this reading about fish online as well as fish keeping ourselves has educated us. Sometimes this causes an "information dump", I guess because there's no test to take.

It's also very easy to make the mistake of choosing the wrong person to share a fish story or idea with.

Normally when a guy around my age (30) is talking about fish, its usually something along the lines of "that big fish they saw, that ate some goldfish/minnows" and when that 20 second story is over, they are done.

Every once in a while I run into someone who has something like a 10 gallon tank up and running but doesn't understand tank husbandry. These people somehow find a way to keep fish alive or are continuing to replace their fish. The idea of once a week water changes, ph, hardness, etc. is out of the question. They enjoy there tank but not the same way most of us enjoy ours.

Sometimes though you can't help but trap someone. I did just recently when discussing aquaponics. He seemed interested but my wife called me out for my "lecture" when we left the party. She enjoys our tanks but isn't into it like myself.

The list goes on and on, sometimes its wierd to think about how few of what I would consider "true" hobbyist/fish keepers there actually are.

My friends all know that I'm that "fish guy" and that I will talk your ear off about fish. I've gotten a few of my friends into the hobby mostly by giving away my older tanks after an upgrade in hopes of spreading the addiction of fish keeping. I guess I'm like a drug dealer in those respects.

I'll end it at that, before I do like normal and ramble on too long. :)

Well put! :)

I've meet and know a few people who like and keep fish but none are really enthusiastic about it as I am. Most the time I use mfk to vent and talk about fish cause even though people listen but most just look at me clueless.

Another excellent point!

I do this a lot. I love talking about fish to anyone who will listen. I have a couple of friends with tanks. Usually my hubby gets the earfuls though :nilly: Good thing my husband is supportive of my fishkeeping, he has to listen to me all the time :)

i'll tell ya, if the wife was into fish, our relationship would be that much better.

i have my fish, my husband has his coin collection. he does like a few of our fish and likes to feed ect... but im the passionate one about it. he always wanted a fishtank before he met me, i tease him he married me for my tanks sometimes... but since having our daughter and our hobbies... my weekly human interaction consists of the lfs employees/owners and the clerk at the grocery store usually..

i think fishkeeping is deffinately a nerd/hermit/introverted hobby.

granted our family and "friends" dont hesitate to call ether one of us when fish keeping is involved. def have a few tanks around that we've helped, but they only want to talk tanks when they need help with something.
