Absolutely, it's just a shame that our educational system can't get these kids the education they need. Can you imagine how hard it would be to get a good job when you can't even spell simple words in order to complete a job application or resume?

Yes our system is different. We stress thought and learning to problem solve. Most other countries do memorization.

Here we go blaming the teacher....

Next thing I will hear is that teachers spend way to much time surfing the net and MFK when they should be teaching.

Are you kidding some schools it is blocked. Remember as a teacher anything you do can be put in a folder when they want to fire you. They monitor our internet usage. They will report you. They are more strict on teachers than students. They pay teachers.

No doubt GR8! It ties your hands as an educator and forces you to teach to a test. Of course some child must be left behind. Someone has to flip the burgers, mow the yards, manage Blockbuster, etc.

Yes, a basic education is needed for all, but where does that stop?

Gr8, our Professor was saying things are so flawed now that children whose parents can afford it are being forced to seek tutoring outside of the school in order to learn everything they need to?

I also recently saw something on the news where parents who home schooled their children were being forced to send their kids to school because of some stupid law - even though their children demonstrated superior skills to kids two grades higher than them!

Parents should be forced to do more... I work at school that gets a lot of home schoolers. They are not doing better than the school. I get every smart students who work hard, but have skipped entire parts of their education. Math is the toughest. Most home school kids are hard works, but way behind other students.

Why is the NCLB the number one issue for Educators? Please expand on your comments, I'd like to hear your opinions?

Once a school is out of compliance, the state can stop funding, come in and take over, hence schools do everything in their power to work within the given misguidelines.

Here is my big problem with NCLB. Which Obama supports, and the evil witch wants to get rid of.

Anyways...

All students must pass a test. However after the test is given, they look at the scores and draw a line in the middle and call that the pass line. So if all 10th graders of one year are completely stupid. A score that was above average, would be failing the next year. So half of the students fail. No matter what. After that if all groups of students do not pass (an assigned percentage) then the school fails. For example

If 70% whites pass
70% free and reduce pass
but 45% of special Ed pass your school fails...

You cares if your school improved by 17% (unheard of number which our school did) If you fail one group your school fails. Oddly enough special Education students who may not be able to perform at the level of their peers ever, are expect to magically pass a test that is bias.

So it sucks... and worse some states require students to pass a test over U.S. History (Ohio) which you only need a 38 to pass. That is right 38 out of 100. Indiana half students must fail, but you can not graduate until you pass the test.

I hate government intervention in education, but the union supports Big Government candidates. That is stupid.

From my standpoint, I rely on conveying my message to a corporate environment. If I can't get my point across through words, proper words and grammar, MY company loses out. I take pride in how and what I write and think it helps those reading it. Ever speak to someone will poor verbal skills? Do you really feel they are on the same page as you? Shouldn't this be part of life? Isn't communication the one thing we should always be able to fall back on? Good god man, get that man a vowel!

NCLB is a very complex issue so I will keep this simple. NCLB dictates how and what I teach. It even dictates how many minutes a day I must teach any given subject. It creates a system based all on test taking and of little creativity and critical thinking. It also does not help failing schools and only penalizes them if test scores objectives are not reached.

This is why just last week I spent the afternoon lecturing my first graders why its so important to properly bubble in thier tests! :screwy:

NCLB is also IMPOSSIBLE. Some children will be brighter than others and its just a plan fact. Their are to many outside factors outside of school that influence a childs learning, whether it be genetics, IQ, parenting skills, resources, money, home life, etc.

Whether the general public wants to believe it or not some children will get left behind.

Ok I better stop now before I get fired typing this on a school computer!

Agreed! I am a special education teacher. Some of my students have an IQ below 70. One 7th grader cannot remember how to spell "the". I have tried many different ways of teaching it to him, rote memorization, using markers, using sand to write, shaving cream to write, etc... and he cannot remember it. And I feel bad for him becasue he tries so hard. Yet I am not a good teacher because of this and NCLB. It is a crap law.
