If English isn't your second language, then it isn't a big deal. I don't really get annoyed by poor spelling on the internet, because I've come to expect that.

The only thing that annoys me is people who don't separate their posts - they are just huge blocks of text without any punctuation... I just ignore those.

For people to think that horrible grammar and spelling isn't a big deal... what exactly is your career/career path?! I am in university, and it is actually sickening that people graduate from a respected program and can't write worth a damn.

Not a big deal here, but a good habit to get into. It doesn't matter how intelligent or creative you are; if you can't write well you have no credibility. This obviously varies depending on your career...

people make mistakes or are just lazy.... who cares what their career/career path is... its their choice... if you are educated then congrats what university are you in? community collage? good choice... i mean look at Einstein he's not a writer and look at his works its pretty credible... At eight he still couldn't read or write. His teaches thought he was retarded... anyways his writing skill still suck yet when you hear Einstein you think Genius.... a person's career path is their choice if everyone was college educated... who would build roads, do plumbing, tiles, air conditioning, electrician, truck drivers, or build houses? those are trade skills and they still are able to provide food on the table for their family yet it is more back breaking work but who cares.... what path your going on?? what's your major? are you a business major? well congrats... no one cares...o you mean your an international business major? well thats impressive... and again no one cares

"it is actually sickening that people graduate from a respected program and can't write worth a damn."

well some people might not be a starving writer like you are... some people may have a strong skill in mathematics yet suck at writing.... some people might have a great background in chemistry and can tell you what will react with what and yet suck at writing... some people can memorize biological process and what each process does and why it effects the body the way it does and yet suck at writing.... doctors i've seen have speech impediments cant speak properly yet are able to diagnosis a problem and yet cant write for beans either... not everyone is a writer....

If you read a newspaper that is full of misspelled words and poor grammar, wouldn't you dismiss it? What about a book you bought? A peer-reviewed journal?

If someone tells me:

"yo yr fsh has a funngal infction yuse melakite blue and itll work it helps me"

there is a good chance I'm going to pass on that advice ;)

My path is research. If I write a poorly-written paper and submit it to a scientific journal to be reviewed, what do you think happens? Rejection.

"Street smart hard worker" only gets you so far... you also have to be a book-smart hard worker. A balance is key though, don't be an idiot and don't be a pencil pusher :D

well i didnt read this post before i posted my last comment.... if someone tells me:
"yo yr fsh has a funngal infction yuse melakite blue and itll work it helps me"

and they own an asian arowana or a pima or a 22 inch datnoind or had a huge aquarium or 30 years experience in the hobby or a huge rhom or 25 inch tigrinus cat fish or bumble bee grouper or gulper cats or any valid reason that shows me he knows what he's talking about, then i'd take his advice cause if i don't then i'm back to where i started... not knowing what to do with the fungal infection

Unless you know someone personally or someone posts their CV and lists their experience with every conversation (in both real life or on the internet), you are basing their credibility on how they present their answers.

I'm not sure why you seemed to think I was implying that labourers and those who aren't in academia aren't important/stupid... It sounds like you are making the assumption that education is for white collar pencil-pushers or the bourgeois. So if I have a 'blue collar' job I can't be educated, because if I was I would 'know better' than to have that kind of job? Don't try to put words in my mouth... I've done/still do my share of hard work, how do you think I pay for food, rent, aquariums, education ;)

I made the comment on career path, because I can't see any person going through their life talking like a 12 year old. Success is relative though. Defending the inability to articulate yourself doesn't make much sense.

I just think about all the people in countries worse off than mine, that would give anything to be educated. I remember reading about kids in Afghanastan that risked their lives to go to school, and villagers would stand outside the building guarding it. Yet here we are in so-called "developed countries", *****ing about school and our hard luck.

I guess it is just an example of people being spoiled and not realizing the amazing opportunities they have, because they have never been exposed to different realities.

We are in a new age... in many countries, education is available to everyone as well as clean drinking water, good infrastructure, food quality, etc. These are things we no longer think of as luxuries, but in many places they still are.

I'm big on education because a lot of my family didn't have these opportunities, and I just think there is no excuse for choosing ignorance (actively or passively) when the answers are out there. It may just be spelling and grammar, but it represents more to many people. Some people think this kind of thread is lame, but education is something I'm passionate about. It is what separates us from the animals; hey I love animals, but I also love intensely abstract thought and the examined life.

(like I said, on MFK, that stuff doesn't bother me ;) )

Hey, this is a great thread. I suppose I am a mix of all categories. I rarely make a mistake in grammar or spelling. I am an English and a math major and I read voraciously as a child. However, I can text and abbreviate with the best. I can also build a house from the ground up, including reading and editing the blueprints.
I think a vast majority of misspelling is just laziness and a lack of self pride.
I don't really blame teachers for lack of education, I blame the parents. I don't know a single parent who spends any time with their children reading or practicing math.
I, too, will not do business with a company that uses poor correspondence methods. If they can't use something as simple as spellcheck, how can I expect them to do quality work on my job?
So, on the same note as spelling, who here has a grumble about people with a lazy mouth? I am talking about people who mumble and slur their words. What happened to enunciation?

On a funny note, I also swear like a drunken sailor around friends (but never in front of my parents) and it is quite amusing to see the look on peoples' faces since the impression I give (and my nick name) is Mary Poppins.
