Slow ... I'd say if you get a 2 incher to 12 inches in a year your doing great, expect 9-10 though, then about 18 at best by 2 years, 15-16 is expected and still great ... once he hits 10-12 they start beefing up a bit and getting thicker

I actually noticed him swimming right into the current last night when the lights were off. As long as i walk by very slowly he dosnt seem to spook very much.
At his peak from 4" up to about 8" or so, I was getting better than an inch a month. Once he got to about 8" though he just stopped gorging and began with two week long on/off cycles of feeding and he got at best a half an inch a month once he started doing that. The hard part was getting him on pellets. Once he was on pellets his growth exploded!
I've begun noticing that not only does my fish feed in cycles, he tends to feed MUCH more aggressively when there are a ton of bubbles in the tank.
Mine seem to feed in cycles too, although I rarely see them not eat for more than a few days ... I had an easy time getting them on silversides, a bit more difficult to get on pellets, but still not as hard as getting payara on pellets IMO ... and I agree, I've seen the best growth and coloration happen when they started taking pellets for sure

What about color after on pellets vs. Feeders? My Vitt dont have much color. Yellow tail fin with a hint that red will come. And I've only witnessed one time where he didn't eat at all. That lasted two days. I'm sure he's pushing about 8-10" and haven't quite had it a year yet.

I always feed mine with the lights are on. When mine was little I would put his light in the middle of the tank so it's light in the middle and dark or dim on the ends of the tank. I think it helps with them smashing in to the ends when they freak out. Once he get bigger you can add more light intill your tanks 100% lit. I also painted the back and the sides of the tank, helps them feel more secure and helps with them chasing their reflection.
