Very much south..
just for the sake of discussion...:)

( never was, and probably never will be a ray person ) but follow your subforum consistently due to your above par knowledge and dedication to the fish you keep.

I sense a change in the whole Hybrid venue ( as long as they are black (? ) ) and I feel that, as already stated by one of you in another thread today, the "tables " are changing as far as hybrids are concerned.

Is that really so?

Do you not fear of ending up with one black, more or less amply spotted, ray as happened to us CA cichlid fans with the whole Midas complex?

Again, just for the sake of debate and change of opinions.

Good topic. I've always wondered this. Different fish seem to demand different expectations as far as purity is concerned.

I am not sure how different a Motoro is to a Pearl (that's what I crossed). It may well lead to the pure Leo's etc being worth more.

I personally fell that more domestic rays would live a far happier life in captivity if they could be bred to stay smaller as per the mini marbles, certainly less would die due to lower waste and less would be cramped in small tanks....but I guess this might be a bit like saying why cant all Dogs stay like puppies?

Didn't Hitler want to breed a super race of tall, blonde and athletic people?

Its a scary thought...and I am a hybrid fan.

I personally believe there will always be a market/desire for pure blood rays.

That being said, most people do not want a species only tank since rays tend to get along well with each other and the different patterns are so appealing. Right or wrong hybrids will happen.

Then take into consideration fact that some hybrid patterns are very unique and beautiful, this will continue to drive their popularity.

Honestly, I have fought with the desire to keep a species only tank not only due to beauty but also to keep pure blood rays around...what to do. :screwy:

I have nothing, from a hobbyist point of view, against hybrids and keeping what one likes.

But several species went down the drain, that way, and we are stuck with specimens that, unless we are 1000% sure of provenance, will end up being considered hybrids....

I'm a fan of pure bloods.
To me, rays are a rare enough thing we need to keep the lines as clean as well can.

We may mix up the gene pool enough within the next few years that proving '100%' that an animal is pure and not a mix will be impossible. At this point, we should not need wild caught rays, we should be able to supply the demand with captive bred animals.

I believe that Tigers are almost at the point of being Generic now due to inbreeding but some of this is to save the species. If we can keep the hobby supported and stop plundering the wild then that has to be a good thing. If I was starting out with rays now, knowing what I know then I think I would have stuck with one species but my rays did produce better looking pups than their parent IMO. A very black pure Leo with big spots and not too many is still the ultimate beauty for me but my new tank will have to wait and not sure if a Leo would try to mate with my other rays.

Personally... although some of the hybrids are pretty cool looking, after a lot of consideration, I am against hybrids. With my own stuff I have sold off my hybrids and odd balls and curently keep my ray species seperate. My thinking with this is that rays are already so variable and change so much as they grow, a hybrid pup may look SOO different as it grows that no one can possibly know how it will turn out. we already see hybrids coming out of asia that are sold as one thing because of the way they look as pups (BDS) that have other species mixed in. Down the road I want to be able to ID what I have confidently and also hope not to need fresh imports to reestablish true bloodlines.

That being said I think wild Hybridization is more prevelent then in other species among stingrays,

A lot of rays was wild caught in the past but now anyone who has a big tank and basic knowledge of fish keeping can keep and breed rays

As for hybrids I used to be a purest but moved with the times

Pure bloods are easy to breed so will never go up in price to breed pure all you need to do is keep one breed of ray it's as simple as that

People are breeding more hybrids just to create some different

With so few ray breeders it should be fairly easy to track down the origin of nearly any captive bred ray. The biggest threat is shady mofos who would attempt to pass a hybrid off as pure bred
