Arghh DONT USE THE HOSE!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
not sure what the temp was but it felt relativly the same when I stuck my hand in the water to move things around after I filled it up. hmm. I normally keep them aorund 79-82 degrees.

Well Ash...I'm assuming your in Florida but even there the ground water (especially after running it for several minutes) is not gonna be even close to 80 degrees. As a test let the hose water run for the same amount of time that you did before and then put some in a bucket and check the temp. You might as well test it while your at it also. I am just making a wild azsed guess but I bet the water was no warmer than 73F. At 73 your talking a 6 to 8 degree differance...that's definately enough to kill.

So sorry for your loss....

But the thing is, when I use my sink water, I always use it on cold and put it in my tank and it never killed them before..? Same when I had a way to use my sink like a hose untill thingie broke.

Thingie, I love those technical terms! :D

My guess would be what a few others have mentioned about mildew-chemicals in hoses. There are warnings not to drink water out of those types of hoses. I have seen drinking-water safe hoses.

Could also be if the hose is used to spread fertilizer/pesticide with those miracle grow sprayers...some would get on the hose.

Some areas in florida use city water in the house and canal water for the outside hoses. Could that have been the problem. Cousins live in Cape Coral and that is how the whole area is setup.

So today I cleaned out my 30gallon African tank and decided a new system and easy way to clean it and make it nice so I re did my tank and cleaned it out it was great everyone was fine about 4 hours later All my Africans are dead except for 2 and my eel. I normally use my house water b/c its levels are perfect for my Africans... well my dad is a plumber and has everything like the sinks and showers hooked to the hose water, it is al the same water. So I asked my dad if I use the hose instead of filling buckets from the sink would it be the same water, he told me it was b/c he has it all hooked to the same system. So I used the hose water and now all my fish except for two are dead. I had 5 total in the tank, I lost my breeding pair (Johanni and Auratus) and my blue zebra :swear: :swear: My eel survived along with my one that is black with white outline and a blue looking face in the light (not positive to what it is..) and my colbalt blue Pseudotropheus or w/e :( My poor fish! I was gonna clean out my other two tanks thank gosh I got lazy and didnt. Either something happened to my water sense last month or my hose water is just scrwed up. So anyways dont use your hose water its a bad idea! :swear:

Now I am gong to go mourn the death of my africans

Sometimes the copper head on the hose reacts with the water it lets out and changes some of the nutrients int o toxins. Espicially in florida wher the water is not too great. Sorry for your loss

ouch. that sucks ash. sorry to hear about that. i hope it never happens to my precious africans. i usually fill up the bucket in my bathtub because the water seems better there than the focet outside :(
