Depends on the species. I'd say 50 for the first comet, then 15-20 for each additional. I'm very generous with my fishies tanks
I got my fancies a 100+. That'll be the only tank I have, and it has to be hidden in the basement.

The critters my mother mainly wants gone, or not here at all are the arachnids and their food...
The only way I've found to get a larger tank is find a fish that your parent really loves, then work from there... Make it their idea.
But if they say no, I don't see a reason to pressure them about it, their choice.
Most of my things were free, I have no clue how I end up getting things super cheap or free, maybe people feel bad for me

i had a deformed oranda.. i named him lucky..payed 17 bucks for him lol.. he had a bent spine lol a deformed mouth a blind eye and missing a fin near his tale lol.. he came from wal-mart of course lol
bf, just do what i did. order your tank and when it arrives they cant do anything about it. my first tank was a 100gal lol. i remember my dad asking me maybe you can put it on a nice little coffee table, i just said...hmmm no it comes with a stand already. when it came it was up against the wall and my dad couldnt say anything because i had already bought it. so just do that, it works, trust me 
yea i know how it feels to i used to be a gammer and they yelled at me for playing to much and know i found something that learning and fun and when i get bad grades they threaten to break/take away all my tanks kill the fish and take away all the money i earned....
just buy it bring it home and set it up, I'm lucky with my parents. My mum loves loaches so i've got a few large tanks only condition is that most of them have loaches in.

azn parents dont care i tried that didnt work that way they yelled at mean then they realsed if they gave it away they dont lose anything....
