I'm moving into a new house soon and there is going to have more space for my fish so i'm getting a tank between 200 gallons to 300 gallons. I am wondering if arowanas and armatus (or payaras in general) can be put in the same tank together? I either looking at an black aro, african aro, asain, or a leichardti. I'm leaning toward the asain aro though. I found a nifty price for juvis just yesterday. What do you guys think?
I just don't want my armatus to kill the arowana like the 2 angelfish I had with it. The armatus is around a bit over 7 inches. I'm planning to get an aro about the same size or a bit slightly smaller. 6 inches?

Any experiences, concerns, or just comments?

thanks

I had a 14" black Aro with an 8" Armatus together for a long time. They were very compatible because the Aro is mostly at the top and the Armatus was near the bottom. So they didn't get in each others way. I actually think they are a very good combination since the Aro's are usually too large for the Armatus to swallow and the Aro won't bother the Armatus if it's big enough. They grow at similar rates as well although the Aro may grow a little faster.

The only thing I would be cautious about is to make sure nothing is same or smaller than the Armatus. They can swallow a biiig meal. :grinno:

My 2 angelfish in which was pretty big was killed by my armatus. So what's the difference between angels and aros?

Theres a huge difference between them aro is a top water angel is all over the tank, angel fish only get a couple inches aro is 30 plus, angel fish is peace full aro will throw his weight around.

I've never kept either species, but I have definitely seen armatus kept in the same tank with arowana in multiple pictures and videos. As long as your armatus isn't one of the serial tankmate murderers in general, I could see it working. Just keep in mind armatus have the reputation of sometimes snapping and killing tankmates out of nowhere - that'd be a sad thing to wake up to.

i wouldnt be worried about the aro, i'd be more concerned with the Armatus being intimidated by the aro.... aro's are much more bold and thus not affected as much by movements in and around the tank... if they are both about equal in size or aro is a bit bigger no worries.... if the Armatus is bigger he could make a meal of the aro

Asian aros and armatus has been proven to work. Like sashimimaster said, if you get an aro that is the same size as the armatus it should be able to hold its own. These are ideally compatible fish IMO.

what kind of aro would be suited best with armatus?

I would think that either black or silver would probably fit better than an Asian. They have better temperaments and favor the surface more than AA do. AA's are more likely to swim at midlevel than a SA species and as such are more likely to bump heads with the army.

I think a 300 with your army, two SA aros and a school of big silver dollars like ERH's would be a stunner of a tank!

edit- and a nice, calm slow growing cat like a tig or jur and some bichirs as bottom dwellers. That would be a super sexy tank!
